Position Overview

KU Libraries seeks an individual to steward and build collections supporting the research and curricular needs of faculty, staff, and students with a particular emphasis on one or more of the following subject areas: African Studies or English/American Literature.

The Humanities and African Studies or English/American Literature Librarian is a member of the Content Development Department, which is dedicated to the stewardship of the University of Kansas Libraries’ collections in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.  Members of the Content Development Department work collaboratively to strategically develop and manage the Libraries’ collections in support of the teaching and research programs of the university.  The librarian is proactive in evaluating and promoting innovative approaches in developing collections across all disciplines, supporting multiple subject areas as needed.  Reporting to the Head of Content Development and working with colleagues in the libraries’ Research Engagement Division and International Collections Department, as well as academic programs, departments and centers, the librarian provides in-depth research consultations and advanced information literacy instruction.

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position. Rank considerations are based on professional performance, research, and service experience sufficient to qualify for appointment at the rank of Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian. Job Description

Professional Responsibilities (70%)

  • Content development:
    • Builds, evaluates, and assesses collections through review and selection of materials related to assigned disciplines, including materials in languages other than English, print and electronic books and journals, streaming video, and other formats.
    • Maintains an awareness of faculty curricular needs and changes in programs and research in assigned subject areas.
    • Monitors approval plans for relevancy of receipts and adjust profiles as necessary.  Carefully expends fund allocations.
    • Keeps abreast of policies and technical procedures related to acquiring materials.
    • Updates collection policies for assigned subjects.
    • Participates in regional, national, and international consortial collaborations.
    • Reviews gifts of materials that support current programs.
  • Collaborates with faculty and instructors in assigned subject disciplines to teach research skills by developing course integrated instruction, assignments, and assessment tools that evaluate learning outcomes.
  • Provides specialized reference and consultation services to faculty, students, researchers, visiting scholars, and the general public whose research relates to assigned disciplines.
  • Develops and maintains basic and specialized custom research guides for course-integrated research.
  • Communicates issues implicit in scholarly communication and open access in discussions with colleagues within and beyond the KU community.
  • Works collaboratively as a member of project teams and other groups to advance the libraries’ strategic priorities.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to advancing diversity efforts in the Libraries and contributes to an inclusive environment.
Research (20%)
  • Contributes to the profession’s collective knowledge by engaging in scholarly research activity. Research may involve the publication of articles, books, book reviews, grant-supported inquiry, or editorial work.
Service (10%)
  • Engages in service to the Libraries, the University, and to professional organizations at the regional, national and/or international levels by participating in committee work, projects, and other contributory achievements.  

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or foreign equivalent by date of appointment.
  • Effective written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree or coursework in English and American Literature OR Bachelor’s or advanced degree or coursework in African Studies, including Africa and the African diaspora.
  • Experience building and maintaining scholarly collections in an academic or research library in a variety of formats.
  • Reading proficiency in one or more native languages spoken on the continent of Africa (e.g. Kiswahili, Housa, Amharic), French, German, or Italian.
  • Experience working with international vendors and publishers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment.
  • Experience in developing and assisting faculty and instructors with instructional sessions to meet the objectives of course goals.
