About the Opportunity

The Chemical Engineering Department at Northeastern University is seeking outstanding individuals to fill a full-time non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant/Associate/Full Teaching Professor with a focus in the area of Chemical Engineering.

Northeastern University teaching professor faculty are non-tenure track with potential of promotion from Assistant Teaching Professor to the ranks of Associate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor.  Full-time teaching professors are not eligible for tenure, but have opportunities for educational impact in both the university and their broader professional field.  Non-tenure-track faculty have renewable appointment terms guided by the Faculty Handbook.

The Northeastern chemical engineering student body includes approximately 400 undergraduate and 100 Masters and PhD students.  Candidates would join a department of 25 tenure-track and 4 non-tenure-track teaching faculty, as well as several affiliated and visiting faculty.

The main responsibility of the non-tenure-track teaching faculty is high-quality student-centered teaching, including course preparation, delivery, and assessment. The annual course responsibility is six courses. The Assistant/Associate/Full Teaching Professor also participates in department, university, and professional service activities and will be engaged in a modest level of scholarship for their own professional development around education and pedagogy.

Course assignments may be at both the undergraduate and graduate levels within the Chemical Engineering department with primary emphasis on core topics within the department. These topics include both fundamental chemical engineering courses such as thermodynamics, transport phenomena, kinetics, and process control, but also courses required for Master’s degrees such as Pharmaceutical Engineering or Electrochemical Engineering. In addition to teaching, the position may require industry outreach to support experiential components of degree program curriculum within Chemical Engineering and course development.

Non-tenure-track teaching faculty are required to provide appropriate service activities, including, but not limited to advising undergraduate and graduate students, student recruiting, and e-learning development. Non-tenure-track faculty may spend a small amount of time on educational research & scholarship, including publications and presentations. Such activities are encouraged and supported by the Chemical Engineering department within the workload policy.

Ph.D. required in Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field by the appointment start date. Excellent written and oral communication skills and evidence of teaching effectiveness is expected. Candidates should be enthusiastic about teaching and mentoring students and have an ability to teach a broad range of core chemical engineering curriculum effectively.

Statement of Teaching Interests & Philosophy: Please summarize your past instructional and mentorship experiences and expertise, your pedagogical philosophy, your plans/goals for teaching (including existing and proposed courses), and your strategies for teaching and mentoring a diverse cohort of undergraduate and graduate students. Include a section discussing educational scholarship that you would conduct as part of your efforts in instruction and/or working with students.
