Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Columbia, MISSOURI
Deadline: 30 Mar 2024

The Department of Physics and Astronomy  at the The University of Missouri (MU) seeks applications for outstanding faculty candidates, at all ranks, whose research is in Condensed Matter Physics.  All appointments will be part of MizzouForward, the most important strategic investment to achieve research excellence and student success in the history of the university. This initiative leverages existing institutional strengths and addresses national scientific priority areas through innovation and collaboration. Successful candidates will have outstanding, competitive, externally funded research programs in any area of experimental or theoretical Condensed Matter Physics, Research areas may include, but are not limited to, topological phases of matter, strongly correlated electronic and magnetic materials, spintronics and quantum information. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research complements the department’s existing strengths in condensed-matter theory and experiment. Candidates at the Full Professor level who have a particularly outstanding record of leadership in the field might be considered to head a cluster of hires.

The Mizzou Forward initiative represents a large investment in recruiting faculty and developing new cutting-edge research facilities dedicated to empowering interdisciplinary collaboration. Our Condensed-Matter program benefits from, and has strong connections to, several important campus resources. The recent $27M expansion of the electron microscopy core facility provides world-class materials characterization resources. The University of Missouri operates MURR which, at 10 MW, is the highest-power university research reactor in the United States and it has several instruments for neutron scattering, including triple-axis, reflectometry and powder diffraction. And the MU Materials Science and Engineering Institute serves as a hub for materials-related research with an emphasis on collaborative, interdisciplinary activities that span across research disciplines.

A Ph.D. in physics by time of appointment is required.  Candidates will be evaluated on the following factors: Track record of external research funding, particularly from federal agencies; Research portfolio and accomplishments; National awards and honors; Fit of research area to department and campus priorities.

Candidates across all academic ranks will be considered. Nominations and inquiries of interest may be sent in confidence to [email protected].
