Position Description


Advertised Job Summary
The University of South Carolina School of Medicine is seeking a student-centered faculty member to serve as the assistant dean for pre-clerkship curriculum. The assistant dean is responsible for the organization, supervision, and fiscal management of the Office of Curricular Affairs. This position reports to the associate dean for undergraduate medical education. This is a non-tenure track faculty position at the level of an assistant, associate, or full professor.
Representative Duties:
  • Oversees the pre-clerkship curriculum in collaboration with course directors and the curriculum committee. This includes updating of curriculum administration policies, preparation of course/block schedules/academic calendars, managing room reservations for SOM educational spaces on the SOM VA campus, and assisting with the AAMC SCOPE Survey.
  • Monitors proper and efficient use of assigned staff; provides staffing recommendations in compliance with Equal Employment Opportunity principles and guidelines; completes annual staff evaluations.
  • Oversees and manages the office budget.
  • Coordinates and prepares timely, accurate, and comprehensive reports; responds to all required state, federal, and university requests.
  • Monitors pre-clerkship contact/lecture hours, pre-clerkship student academic progress, and faculty/course evaluations. Collaborates with the Curriculum Committee, department chairs, course directors, and the SOM Evaluation Office to assess educational outcomes for the purpose of continuous improvement and to ensure that relevant LCME standards are met.
  • With the support of appropriate Curricular Affairs staff, serves as NBME Chief Proctor and oversees NBME computerized testing.
  • Participates in writing Medical Student Performance Evaluation letters.
  • Engages in educational research.
  • Participates in professional organizations (e.g., GEA, SGEA, AAMC, IAMSE).
  • Serves on school committees, including serving as the chair of the Course Directors Committee. Staffs the M-I/M-II Subcommittee and the Academic Standards Committee.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have an M.D., D.O, Ph.D., or Ed.D. from an accredited university. M.D./D.O. candidates should be board certified in their medical specialty and licensed to practice medicine.
  • Candidates must have or be eligible for a faculty appointment at the USC School of Medicine, and have a demonstrated record of scholarly achievement, teaching experience, and service commensurate with the rank of assistant professor, associate professor or professor. Experience specifically in undergraduate medical education is strongly preferred.

Knowledge of/Experience with:
  • Pre-clerkship curriculum both locally and nationally with an emphasis on best practices and innovations
  • LCME standards related to curriculum oversight and management 1
  • Faculty member roles in instruction and assessment 2
  • Understanding of AAMC’s SCOPE survey
  • Federal/state regulations pertaining to student equity, privacy, and disability services
  • Successful interpersonal skills, organizational leadership, team building, staff development and communication techniques
  • Organization, operations, policies, and objectives
  • Computer based systems for administrative, business, and educational functions
  • Principles and practices of administration, supervision and training
  • Methods and techniques of program development and administration
  • Principles and procedures of report preparation
