Job Description:

The Atmospheric Sciences Research Center (ASRC) is a leading-edge Research Center at the State University of New York at Albany.  ASRC is located in the University's ETEC Building a hub of collaborative research and partnerships with ASRC's xCITE Laboratory, the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Science (DAES), The Center of Excellence in Weather and Climate Analytics (COE), The New York State Mesonet (NYSM), The National Weather Service (NWS), the State Weather Risk Communications Center (SWRCC), and The College of Emergency Preparedness Homeland Security and Cybersecurity (CEHC).

ASRC is seeking to hire a Systems Administrator to manage internal Linux research servers and MacOS/Windows systems as well as liaise with the University's Information Technology personnel in support of High-Performance Computing needs of the Center's faculty, staff, and students. This position serves as the lead in hardware configuration, design, installation, setup, and maintenance, for computing systems & peripherals. This position is also responsible for managing all software, including user accounting, software installation, and software training for users.  The successful candidate has an interest in technology and the intellectual curiosity to learn to build complex environments meeting the diverse computational and data needs of ASRC. She/He/They have keen analytical skills and are driven to solve problems and acquire new knowledge to inform and build a computing environment commensurate with the needs of a public research university. The position supports users in ASRC, NYSM, COE, and the SWRCC, collectively referred to as "ASRC Users."  

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Install and maintain all ASRC research servers in the UAlbany Data Center.
  • Provide day-to-day operational support for ASRC research servers including patching, upgrading, configuration management, system backups, continuous monitoring, and performance management.
  • Serve as primary contact for ASRC network/VPN connection needs.
  • Maintain shared equipment (e.g., printers and copiers).
  • Acquire/purchase individual laptops/desktops and peripherals, install basic software, and ensure proper maintenance of these systems.
  • Facilitate purchasing/acquisition of new hardware, including establishing a relationship with vendors and acquiring quotes.
  • Maintain detailed inventory of all ASRC compute and peripheral systems (Data Center and otherwise).
  • Serve as a primary contact for ETEC technology needs (e.g., Crestron systems, Science on a Sphere, xCITE Lab visualization).
  • Establish and maintain a relationship with UAlbany ITS and Data Center staff.
  • Maintain subject matter expertise by staying current with industry trends and following a professional development plan. 
  • Install, maintain, and train on advanced computing software for shared servers, such as, SLURM, Docker, Kubernetes, Open-On Demand, Jupyter, etc.
  • Meet basic needs of ASRC users to facilitate research, such as basic web portals, data mounting and retrieval, cronjobs, etc.
  • Provide basic training to ASRC users on HPC and GPU computing. 
  • Maintain security posture in accordance with industry best practice and ITS policies and procedures. 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Serve as liaison with NYSM Administration & Computing.
  • Serve as liaison with the UAlbany AI Institute.
  • Be available to provide scheduled support and consultation outside normal business hours, including occasional evenings, holidays, or weekends, within reasonable professional obligation and expectation. 

Reporting Relationships:

  • Serve as primary supervisor to Lead Engineer for the ASRC xCITE Lab, in collaboration with the xCITE Lab Director. 
  • Serve as primary supervisor to Systems Administrator for the SWRCC in collaboration with the SWRCC Director. 


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education (DOE) or internationally recognized accrediting organization in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience in design, planning, and implementation of infrastructure components including servers, storage, and network. 
  • Experience with operating system installation, upgrades, and software library installation and maintenance.
  • Software programming skills in C/C++, Python, Linux shell scripting.
  • Database design, data management.
  • HPC Cluster experience with scheduling systems such as SLURM and PBS, and parallel libraries for shared and distributed memory applications.
  • Experience with GPU computing hardware, software, and development.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education (DOE) or internationally recognized accrediting organization in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Machine learning development.
  • Familiarization with containerization software.
  • Web application development (e.g., NodeJS, HTML, CSS, React).
  • API development and maintenance.
