Description of Work Unit
The Student Disability Center (SDC) is responsible for ensuring the university is compliant with federal mandates prohibiting discrimination based on disability. The SDC provides the assessment, recommendation and provision of academic accommodations for students with disabilities, including those with chronic physical or mental health conditions and those who have temporary disabling conditions. In addition, SDC acts as an advocate on behalf of students with disabilities to promote and support inclusive activities and policies. SDC acts as a partner with students, faculty and staff to ensure students with disabilities are afforded an equal opportunity to benefit from, and participate in, all activities and programs sponsored by the university with an emphasis on retention and graduation.
The SDC is housed within CSU’s Office of Inclusive Excellence as part of the Student Diversity Programs and Services.

Position Summary
The ASL interpreter is responsible for facilitating communication between hearing and Deaf individuals in classrooms, labs, meetings, and other assignments.
In this position, a qualified candidate will:
  • Provide ASL interpreting services to students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing
  • Interpret all class lectures, conversations, meetings, training sessions, and other requested events to support the student.
  • Collaborate with faculty to gain understanding of relevant concepts to better facilitate translation.
  • Maintain awareness of best practices, emerging trends, and new legislation relating to ASL interpreting.
  • Supports the values and institutional goals as defined in the College’s Strategic Plan.

This is an exempt position.
Position Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum 1 year interpreting experience.
  • Experience effectively working in a team environment.
  • Ensure that policies and procedures are compliant with Section 504 and the ADA
  • Ability to provide and respond to feedback effectively and constructively.
  • Strong interpersonal and positive leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3 years of experience providing ASL interpreting for students in higher education.
  • NIC or equivalent

  • Establishes and maintains a good working relationship with students, team members, instructors and staff.
  • Prepares for classes by reading and becoming familiar with technical vocabulary and content.
  • Stays updated on new developments and techniques in the interpretation field by attending workshops and conferences and reviewing current literature, legislation, and technology.
  • Report to work punctually and able to keep up with the demands of the work-place. Working hours may include weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
