The Office of Academic Assistance in the College of Arts and Sciences is seeking to hire a higly skilled and dynamic Academic Advisor II. The Academic Advisor II will assist academic departments/units in the College of Arts & Sciences with verbal or written academic plan, advisement interpretation and implementation of university policies and procedures in the areas of student enrollment and evaluation.  Provides information to, and advises both enrolled and prospective students regarding the academic programs offered by the University or a specific department, including requirements for admission and retention through graduation; may coordinate the work of entry level academic advisors.


The scope of responsibilities will include these essential duties but is not limited to the following,

  • Advises prospective and current students about academic requirements and selection of courses

  • Disseminates information on university policies and procedures to faculty, parents, students, etc.

  • Maintains students' files updated throughout their academic careers and makes changes to records as necessary

  • Conduct orientation sessions for groups of incoming students

  • Audits student records for curriculum, major, graduation requirements

  • Evaluates and determines transfer credits; researches course descriptions to determine transferability

  • Compares transcripts with entrance and graduation requirements, and advises students on appropriate actions

  • Refers students with academic discrepancies to proper officials for further action

  • Assists in the preparation of special reports relating to enrollment and related matters

  • Evaluates and maintains student records for degree requirements using academic evaluation system

  • Monitors student registration activities and academic performance/progress

  • Coordinates communications to students regarding course scheduling, core and major requirements, academic resources etc.

  • Reviews course adjustment forms and petitions for readmission of students

  • May teach or co-teach in GSU 1010 courses

  • Monitors and tracks the retention, progression and graduation of all students within assigned population

  • May conduct informational sessions for the college

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:  Bachelor's degree and three years of related experience; or a combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:   The preferred candidate will possess the following attributes, 

  • Previous experience associated with higher education / academic office environment

  • Experience advising students

  • Experience with any of the following - Banner, Argos, Degree Works, CAPP, EAB/GPS

  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Word & Excel

  • Excellent verbal and written communications 

  • Strong organizational acumen and a proclivity for attention to the details

  • Ability to think critically about issues and opportunities and identify solutions and options

  • A self-starter, quick learner with an awareness to meet deadlines

  • Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships
