HJF is seeking an Art Therapist to support the National Endowment for the Arts’ (NEA) Creative Forces Program located at Joint Base Lewis McChord in Tacoma, WA. in HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Creative Forces Program. 

The incumbent will implement Art Therapy programming that will investigate how the creative arts therapies and various healing arts models developed and tested within the Creative Forces Network can be adapted and delivered to Service Members, Veterans and families at designated Network expansion locations, both in person and as directed via telehealth. 

Responsibilities:

  • Perform clinical care, community engagement and scholarly activity, while serving as an integral part of the interdisciplinary clinical team at the designated location as well as within the Creative Forces Network.
  • Provide clinical services on site and as directed via telehealth, including implementing treatment programs and professional casework for active duty military personnel, veterans and their eligible dependents designated to receive care by the Department of Defense (DoD) or Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and as specifically allowed under the Memorandum of Understanding between the site facility and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).
  • Seek and develop opportunities to create connections between their designated clinical site and community arts organizations to enhance the desired clinic to community continuum. Participate in education, outreach and media activities as requested by the Military Medical Advisor.
  • Advance the collective understanding of the value and impact of the Arts, with specific emphasis on the Creative Arts Therapies evaluation and research.  Seek opportunities to educate and raise awareness of the role of Creative Arts Therapists, including their contribution to improving the health and well-being of service members, veterans and their families.
  • Engage with the cadre of CATs within the Creative Forces Network to identify and share best practices, including through the development of content for the National Resources Center. Actively engage in both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration with the Network of CATs as active member of a community of practice to ensure consistent delivery of high-quality care, while supporting one another professionally.
  • Coordinate and work with the clinical site POC for day-to-day operations and to determine site specific requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  •  Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of and direct experience working with military and/or Veteran populations, including military connected families. Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Possess the ability to work with diverse patient populations and sensitivity to individuals from varied backgrounds and cultures. Have proficiency with the latest version of advanced and various computer software applications used by the DoD and/or VA and possess strong skills in using the entire Microsoft Office suite of products.

    Minimum Education: Master’s Degree or higher in Art Therapy from an accredited Art Therapy Program. 

    Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Keep all certifications current to include Basic Life Support, HIPAA, and any other certifications required by the facility. Maintain registration (ATR or ATR-BC) through continuing education as required by the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB). Comply with clinical site Substance Abuse Testing Program requirements.

    Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 0-2 years of relevant work experience. Prefers 1 year of post-master’s experience in a clinical setting working with military connected patients exposed to trauma.

    Work Environment: The work is performed in an office. Secondary location for this work is from home or alternative location in support of Creative Forces Mission as directed by the Military Medical Advisor.

    Background/Security: U.S. citizenship required; eligible to obtain and maintain a Tier III Investigation/ Secret Clearance and Common Access Card (CAC).
