Job Description:

Overview:  Area Coordinators have primary supervisory responsibility for approximately 600 students in a residential setting.  Area Coordinators will be responsible for the supervision of one "experience area," ie. first year, second year, or third year students. Area Coordinators live in a residence hall or designated housing and work closely with assigned professional and student staff.  Area Coordinators develop, maintain and oversee programs with the goal or providing an active living/learning environment in a safe and comfortable atmosphere.  

Job Duties:

  • Develop rapport and maintain relationships with students in the supervised area that facilitate strong student connections and personal development. 
  • Develop programs and experiences within the residence hall to promote learning outcomes of communication competency, intercultural competency, and ethical citizenship.  Seek new ways to achieve student growth and high impact experiences within the residential setting.
  • Hold regular office hours and be available for conversation and consultation with students on a regular basis.  Identify students in need of additional service and coordinate referrals to others on campus and/or off campus.
  • Serve as a hearing officer to adjudicate alleged violations of the housing code of conduct.
  • Supervise a part-time Resident Director(s), and a student staff consisting of Community Advisors and Community Hosts.  Provide direction and development, and regular feedback to direct reports.  Develop a meeting schedule to promote regular communication with staff.
  • Oversee and maintain hall budgetary records.  Process payroll for student staff members. 
  • Mediate roommate conflicts and work with students to resolve concerns they may have in their living environment.
  • Serve in the on-call duty rotation with responsibility for 24/7 response approximately once every four weeks.  Respond to calls and involve others as necessary for appropriate response to emergency situations.
  • Participate and work with the other members of the Residential Life department on projects and initiatives.  Attend and participate in staff meetings and trainings.  Take on additional projects as assigned and necessary.  
  • Establish, track and report on appropriate metrics including occupancy reports, student issues, check-in and check-out information.  Facilitate student room changes when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

Education: Master's Degree in a related field such as Higher Ed. Administration, College Student Personnel or Counseling. 

Experience:  2 years of Residential Life experience preferred.  

Compensation: Area Coordinators receive an annual salary of $35,600.  Additionally, ACs receive a one-time $1,500 furniture stipend at the time of hire to purchase apartment furnishings, and $1000.00 in Viking Bucks that can be used in campus dining facilities, and a reserved parking space

Travel:  Travel limited to professional conferences and association meetings.

Physical Requirements:  Must be able to lift 25 pounds on a frequent basis.  Also required is the ability to listen, hear, speak, read, climb stairs, bend, stoop, and stand for intermittently long periods of time.  Must be able to use a computer to accomplish a variety of job tasks.

Special Requirements:  As key personnel overseeing student concerns, this position requires residence on campus in a designated housing unit.  This position requires the ability and willingness to model the mission and high standard of behavior of Augustana College.
