- Description: The Great Basin Institute (GBI), in cooperation with National Park Service, is recruiting 2 Archivists to join GBI’s Research Associate (RA) Program and support the management, inventorying, cataloging, and rehousing of museum collections at Bryce Canyon National Park. The Archivist RAs will assist in the organization and maintenance of museum collections at the Park. Specifically, the RAs will continue working on finishing existing Facilities and Maintenance and Cultural Resources Collections, inventorying, cataloging, and rehousing the Interpretation, Oral History, and Natural Resources Collections, performing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Housekeeping, and assisting the Park Curator with other museum tasks as needed. Primary Responsibilities (including but not limited to): • Cataloging and indexing a variety of materials; • Examining, categorizing, recording and cross referencing related information; • Working in collaboration with park staff and others; • Data entry and assisting with finding aids; • Ensuring proper maintenance, storage, control and record management of materials; • Monitoring climate control systems and properly housing and rehousing historic documents; • Assisting with preservation planning; • Assessing new collections and addressing any IPM or other concerns; • Making collections accessible for study and reference and providing assistance for visiting researchers and park staff; • Background research to classify, authenticate, value and describe historic documents and materials; • Reporting, assisting with special projects, and providing clerical support as needed. Timeline: • 52-week appointment beginning mid-February, 2021 • Full time (40 hours/week) Location: While working on Bryce Canyon National Park records, these positions will be duty stationed at Zion National Park. Zion National Park is a unique geological, natural, and cultural treasure in southwestern Utah. Opportunities for sightseeing, hiking, and camping abound. Humans have occupied this area for approximately 10,000 years and archaeological sites occur throughout the park. Work will be based out of park offices in Springdale, UT. - Qualifications
- Technical requirements: • Demonstrated knowledge and experience related to archival collections and museums work including technical knowledge of archival methods, procedures, and technology; • Experience with appraisal and evaluation, accessioning, cataloging, description, and arrangement; • Knowledge of preservation techniques and storage environments; • Understanding of rehousing, handling, and treatment procedures and standards; • Experience working with researchers and providing public information; • Knowledge of the NPS cataloging and record keeping systems, desirable; • Knowledge of archival deterioration processes, health and safety procedures; • Familiarity with historic and modern media and information formats (i.e. graphic print, architectural drawing duplication formats, electronic media, audio and motion picture, photographs, etc.); • Practiced skills in arranging and describing archival collections, indexing, and working with finding aids; • Experience with database management, Word, and archival management software programs. Additional requirements: • Ability to work independently or with limited supervision to resolve problems; • Ability to communicate information in a clear and concise manner, verbally and in writing; • Comfortable with self-direction and demonstrated sound judgement; • Adaptability to changing project needs; • Strong attention to detail; • Willingness to coordinate with co-workers, Park staff, professional organizations, potential donors, libraries and university contacts, private companies, and the general public as needed; • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift and move heavy materials on a routine basis; • Willingness to work around potentially dangerous collections that may have been exposed to mold, insects, or vermin (wearing required PPE and following precautions); and • Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record. Successful applicant(s) must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position. As part of Great Basin Institute’s Covid-19 Vaccination Policy, all employees are required to receive and provide proof of a full course of COVID-19 vaccine prior to the first day of employment, unless a medical or religious exemption is submitted and approved. All employees covered by this policy are required to be fully vaccinated as a term and condition of employment at Great Basin Institute. Employees are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after completing primary vaccination with a COVID-19 vaccine, with, if applicable, at least the minimum recommended interval between doses.
