Job Description

Facilities Development Management, Office of the University Architect (OUA), seeks an Architect to act on behalf of the Office of the University Architect as the owners Design Manager during all phases of construction projects.

The Office of the University Architect plays a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the university and stewardship of its resources. The Facilities Development and Management department (FDM) at ASU is comprised of OUA, Capital Projects Management Group (CPMG) and Facilities Management (FM). FDM is responsible for the development and construction of all institutional facilities along with the maintenance and operations programs. Project planning and design is managed by OUA with CPMG taking the lead on construction implementation. FDM manages capital projects of all sizes, including but not limited to tenant improvements, site improvements and new construction. The role of the Architect is to coordinate and manage internal and external teams of design professionals during master planning, design and construction efforts of capital projects to ensure they meet the overall goals of the University.

Salary Range

Essential Duties

The role of the Architect is to manage internal and external multi-disciplined design professionals during the design phases of a project, including, but not limited to scope, budget and schedule confirmation, as well as monitoring and review of construction documents, and other exhibits as required. During the initial project definition or master planning phases, the Architect will prepare initial scope, budget, schedule and existing conditions assessments with the assistance of internal resources prior to engaging external design professionals, this may include preparing preliminary reports, sketches, space plans or presentations. The Architect manages multiple projects at one time, ranging in complexity and size with budgets ranging from $50,000 to $10,000,000. They are responsible in ensuring that all designs meet Arizona Board of Regents policies as well as University goals, guidelines and contractual obligations. They also assist with updating University standards and guidelines. The Architect will lead the selection process for external design professionals, including contract negotiations.

DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm

This position is eligible for flexible work options, including alternative work schedules or hybrid remote work schedules where employees spend a minimum of 60% of their regular workweek at their primary ASU work location, subject to approvals per ASU policy.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Architecture or related field AND three (3) years of architectural experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Registered as an Architect in the State of Arizona OR, NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) Certification and become a registered Architect in the State of Arizona within six (6) months after date of hire.  Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.


Desired Qualifications

Evidence of:

  • Eight (8) years of architectural design experience in interior tenant improvements, renovations and additions (e.g. laboratory, office/classroom). 
  • LEED AP or Green Associate Certification 

Experience in: 

  • Researched based projects
  • Experience and demonstrated proficiency with Revit, Sketch Up and 3D rendering software
  • Design, hand sketching 
  • Construction cost estimating
  • Managing multiple projects and coordinating the work of a design team to ensure compliance with the program statement
  • Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Autodesk AutoCAD, Bluebeam Revue and PMIS (Project Management Information Software) programs
  • Architecture and architectural principles, practices and techniques
  • Working with allied professionals including architects, planners, interior designers, landscape architects, engineers and other specialty consultants

Demonstrated knowledge:

  • International building codes and NFPA 101 Life Safety Code; federal and state facility and code requirements; accessibility standards
  • Building materials and construction methods; and structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering system integration related to building costs
  • Effective communication skills
  • Building materials and construction methods
  • Federal and state facility building and accessibility code requirements
  • Structural, mechanical and electrical engineering systems relating to building functions and costs
  • LEED and current sustainability concepts
  • Various project delivery methods including Job Order Contract (JOC), Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) and Design Build (DB)

Ability to: 

  • Organize and coordinate the work of others
  • Lead by example in communicating, participating and encouraging support of the institution's sustainability programs
  • Communicate with customers, colleagues, and the public using a telephone and in-group and face-to-face, one-to-one settings
  • Think critically and present the right depth of relevant data and information to an audience

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.  Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.  Effective communication skills with customers, clients, and the public using a telephone and in-group and face-to-face, one-to-one settings.  Drive University vehicle and/or cart to campus site.

This position is located at the University Services Building, 1551 S. Rural Road, Tempe, AZ (on Rural Road south of Apache Blvd).  

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment.  Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

This position is dependent on the continuation of funding from a specific source other than general operating funds.  As such, this appointment may terminate when the funding is no longer available.
