If this sounds like you, The Montgomery County Department of Parks Archaeology Program is the place you want to be! We are seeking a creative and energetic Summer Archaeology Camp Director to work with children and teens ages 6 - 15, who will coordinate camp details to ensure a smooth and safe operation for the camp.

TheArchaeologyProgramoversees thestewardshipand analysis ofburied culturalresources within Montgomery County Park properties.TheArchaeologyProgramstrives to make the diverse history of Montgomery County's past accessible to all people, todisseminatethe interpretation of archaeological resources through volunteer programing and public outreach.

The Archaeology Camps run from June 17 - August 9, 2024. Candidate would work two weeks prior and one week after camp sessions for a total of ten weeks. The schedule is Monday through Friday. There is potential for additional employment during the year providing archaeological education and interpretation for public events.

Note: There is no camp July 1 - 5, 2024.

Please Note: The salary range listed above represents the earning potential for this position. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Examples of Important Duties

Supervision and Program Management

  • Supervise the Assistant Camp Director and camp participants
  • Plan activities in advance making sure there are adequate supplies and equipment for program
  • Accompany and monitor campers on all field trips, maintaining order during activities, breaks, and meals, and ensure the safety of campers at all times.
  • Address crisis management, discipline and troubleshooting issues related to campers and/or staff
  • Drive campers on field trips in a 15-passenger Montgomery Parks vehicle.

Confidential Record Management


  • Maintain confidential camp records
  • Ensure that all participant and camp paperwork is complete and adheres to the Maryland Youth Camp Safety Standards

Instruction


  • Assist and teach campers archaeological-related activities
  • Develop, teach, and assist campers with arts and craft projects and recreational activities

  • Proficient in up-to-date software (MS Office); ability to learn new software systems

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed or working on a bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field
  • Experience working in a camp supervisory role preferred

Minimum Qualifications


  • Be at least 21 years of age with 24 months experience as a supervisor,
  • Enjoy an interest in archaeology (college courses in anthropology, archaeology, or related field preferred)
  • Have excellent communication and customer service skills and be comfortable working with children ages 6 - 17.
  • Possess a valid driver license and be willing to drive a 15-passenger van with campers
  • Have certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED (training classes available)
  • Must attend and complete M-NCPPC trainings (Driver Training, Youth Camp Safety Standards)

  • This position is seasonal (part-time) and does not include benefits.
  • Complete background and Child Protective Services investigations will be completed prior to hire
