ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB is seeking qualified applicants for an Archaeology Laboratory Manager position in Atlanta, Georgia. The Archaeology Laboratory Manager is responsible for the processing, cataloguing, preserving, and analyzing material recovered from archaeological investigations. Additionally, the Archaeology Laboratory Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the laboratory and ensuring that technicians and lab personnel are employing proper methodologies for reporting and analysis. The Archaeology Laboratory Manager works closely with Principal Investigators, Project Archaeologists, Field Directors, and technicians in developing data management procedures that meet state and federal curation and repository standards. Other responsibilities of the position include management of our intern program, scoping, and maintaining lab and field equipment and materials. Minimal travel (up to 10%) outside of the local area is expected. Relocation assistance for non-local candidates will be provided.

  • Artifact Inventory and Curation Preparation
  • Managing and Maintaining Lab Equipment, Stocks, and Supplies
  • Primary VHB Liaison with Curation Facilities Nationwide
  • Artifact Analysis Reporting, Report Production, and Report Formatting
  • GIS mapping assistance, as needed
  • Editing of archaeology reports, as needed
  • Conduct Phase I, II, III archaeological investigations and archaeological site monitoring (as needed)

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master's Degree (M.A./M.S.) in Anthropology or Archaeology
  • Must meet the Secretary of the Interior (SOI) professional standards for archaeology
  • A member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA), or has the credentials necessary for enrollment
  • 3-5 years of experience in an Archaeological Laboratory and at least 1 of those years in a laboratory supervisory role
  • The ability to travel to a location, walk/hike and conduct fieldwork for long hours, in inclement weather or rugged terrain
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Valid driver's license
  • Artifact database collection software

Preferred Education/Experience
  • Master's Degree (M.A./M.S.) in Anthropology or Archaeology (US Accredited) with a specialization or focus in Laboratory Management, Preservation, or Archaeological Data Management
  • 5-7 years of experience in an Archaeological Laboratory and at least 3 or more years of laboratory supervisory role
  • Familiarity with Re:discovery collection management software

Other Skills and Abilities
  • High level knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Office software applications including:
    • Microsoft Excel
    • Microsoft Word
    • Adobe Acrobat/Bluebeam
    • Microsoft Access
  • Basic photography/digital camera operation knowledge
  • Ample organizational abilities
  • Ability to handle time sensitive or time critical requests
  • Ability to research and apply analytical methods for artifact analysis
  • Have the ability to prioritize workloads to meet multiple project schedules
