This position is located at theCapitol Annex Building in Baton Rouge, LA.

This position does not require a Civil Service test score.

The primary responsibility of the position is to develop, implement, and manage initiatives for heritage education, public information, and public outreach concerning Louisiana's archaeological and cultural heritage. These efforts may include but are not limited to: developing and distributing hard-copy and digital classroom exhibits and teaching kits, developing and/or assisting with the creation of webpages, preparing social media posts, overseeing the state's Archaeology Month, working with International Archaeology Day and Project Archaeology programs, and developing museum exhibits. These efforts will involve consultation and coordination with Federal, State, regional, and local organizations along with federal and state recognized Indian Tribes. Travel around the state is required with occasional overnight stays necessary.

Essential duties include:

50% Develop, implement, and manage initiatives for heritage education, public information,

and public outreach using social media, interactive exhibits, public presentations, and 3D technologies to provide factual and understandable information about Louisiana archaeology and cultural heritage to the general public. Develop curriculum materials and resource guides for use in classrooms that meet state educational standards and, when circumstances permit, present programs to school groups and other organizations. These efforts include using digital products, hands-on teaching kits with original or 3D scanned artifacts, dig box exercises, and other activities.

30% Partner with federal, state, and local organizations to develop and implement archaeological exhibits in cultural districts, museums, and at events sponsored by us and partner organizations.

10% Develop and/or oversee Louisiana Archaeology Month as well as the distribution of

classroom exhibits, teacher kits, and online resources. Coordinate heritage education activities with International Archaeology Day, Project Archaeology, and the Louisiana Archaeological Society.

5% Respond to requests from museums, publishers, and the public for images and information

relating to Louisiana archaeology for use in books, exhibits, and other venues. Organize and maintain appropriate records, including images, usage permissions, and all outreach products.

5% Serve as senior technical advisor to the State Archaeologist.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field.

Ability to work with diverse organizations, discern their needs, and develop the appropriate materials for their use;

Knowledge of Louisiana history and archaeology;

Experience with Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop (or related program), and spreadsheet design;

Ability to write informational materials for the general public and K-12 students;

Knowledge of scientific and archaeological methods and techniques;

Experience using social media in professional, public, and educational contexts;

Ability to independently develop, implement, and manage educational materials;

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in professional and public settings;

Ability to manage time, prioritize work to meet deadlines, work independently, and work with other staff members to accomplish tasks.

Desired Skills and Abilities:

Experience with 3D scanning and printing;

Experience with ESRI ARC Pro GIS software;

Experience with website development and/or website software;

Experience collaborating with teachers;

Experience creating museum exhibits;

Experience creating educational content.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A baccalaureate degree in anthropology, archaeology, maritime studies, geography, history, or heritage resources, plus one year of professional level experience in New World archaeology (e.g. archaeological field experience, archaeological laboratory experience, archaeological collections management experience, archaeological research experience, public archaeology experience, or any combination of these areas totaling one year of experience).

NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Examples of Work

Manages the Archaeological Grants Program.

Supervises field archaeologist conducting surveys as part of the Archaeological Grants Program.

Works regularly with university and private industry archaeologist to develop archaeological survey and site testing projects that conform to federal budgetary and program guidelines.

Develops Scopes-of-services for archaeological survey and testing projects.

Acts as technical expert on Historical Archaeology and on Underwater Archaeology.

Coordinates the permits for archaeological investigation on state land.

Develops and periodically revises the Louisiana Comprehensive Archaeological Plan, which entails: holding public hearings; soliciting comments from archaeologists, land-use managers, private industry, and the public; identifying recordation and preservation needs; in conjunction with others, setting program priorities; and preparing the final document for publication.

Functions as curator for archaeological collections under the Division of Archaeology's control.

Acts as office authority on artifact conservation matters.
