Arborist Supervisor The Certified Arborist at BYU, is responsible for maintenance, pruning, repair, and evaluation of 10,000 trees of 500 varieties on campus. He/she valuates the replacement of storm and infestation damaged trees and maintains detailed records of care in the tree inventory database. He/she supervises and trains three full-time Arborist Technicians in their assigned duties and responsibilities and performs annual evaluation interviews with them. He/she is accountable for ensuring adequate training in safety and proper techniques of pruning, equipment operation, and use of pruning tools. He/she is the designated chain saw safety trainer for campus. With memberships and involvement in ISA, UCFC, and UNLA, he/she represents the University at national and local associations. He/she also participates in snow removal duties. Essential Functions Safety, Public Relations, Vehicle Maintenance and Inspections a. Operate all equipment in a safe, effective manner to minimize the risk of injury and property damage b. Deal with campus, MTC and Church employees/visitors in a professional manner c. Operate and maintain a clean university vehicle d. Perform daily pre and post trip inspections 1. Tree Pruning Disease control Diagnostics Apply knowledge of tree morphology Treatment coordination Vandalism repair Tree removal Structural pruning Assess tree values for replacement Knowledge of species and tree physiology 2. Tree Repair Staking to correct growth and stability Root work: correctly prune roots for tree health, correct girdling roots Brace branches to prevent weak branch/trunk angles Cable to prevent splitting or destruction of trees Lightening arrestors Repair storm damage, vandalism and other damage 3. Supervision, Motivation, and Training Directly train and supervise new employees in proper tree pruning technique and procedures, including safety policies and practices Directly train and supervise new employees in proper chain saw technique and procedures including safety policies and practices Assess shrub pruning performance and results Assist in continuing training and education Liaison with Landscape Specialty Manager Perform annual PDP interviews with Arborist Technicians 4. Snow Removal On call to work within a team scope in assigned snow removal area to clear walks, stairs, roads, plazas, crosswalks, ADA areas, parking lots and as necessary, athletic fields, in a safe and non-destructive manner for the safety of the intended user. 5. Record Keeping Time cards daily Tree files and evaluations Evaluate each tree for aesthetics, health, location and safety on a regular basis Record health, maintenance assessments and future care needs into a tree management database Update inventory based on loss or increase due to weather damage, vandalism, insect or disease, new installation, replacement etc. Generate reports from database as needed 6. Miscellaneous Assist other shops when necessary Education/Experience Minimum education/experience required: B.S. degree in Horticulture or related field AND 5 years arborist experience Preferred: B.S. degree in Horticulture or related field AND 10+ years arborist experience - Certified Arborist - TRAQ or ability to obtain Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications: Ability to pass post interview physical exam Certified Arborist required Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain shortly after hire Ability to obtain a UDOT medical card after hire Certified tree appraiser - obtain in a reasonable amount of time after hire Knowledge/experience with tree microinjection Highly trained chain saw operator, chain sharpening, and maintenance of equipment CPR and First-aid certified after hire Sound knowledge of tree biology Boom truck certified upon hire Able to work at heights, climb trees safely, and possess rigging skills Must have good supervising, mentoring, and training skills Work courteously with all MTC, temple patrons, and/or BYU employees, especially when problems arise Respect and adhere to safety guidelines Effective record keeping Professional attitude, dress and adherence to the University's Honor Code Disclaimer: The information written in this job description indicates the general nature and level of work to be performed.
