Position Summary
The Coordinator of Aquatics & Risk Management will serve as a member of the leadership team for University Recreation. Role is under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of University Recreation and has direct responsibility for all aspects of day to day Aquatics programming and operations, as well as general risk management oversight for University Recreation.
Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Hire, train, supervise, evaluate, and manage aquatics student and non-student part-time employees, including Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, Aquatics Undergraduate Assistants and Aquatics Assistants.
  • Develop and implement in-services for Aquatics staff following Red Cross standards and best practices with a strong emphasis on skill-development, transferable work skills, staff empowerment, diversity and leadership.
  • Oversee all programs, events, and rentals within the Aquatics program area.
  • Design, market, execute and assess programs and annual events, including aquatic facility rentals, swim lessons, lifeguard and lifeguard review courses, CPR courses, water aerobics.
  • Enter all programs into the Fusion software system for sales and reservations
  • Create, identify, and assess program goals and student learning outcomes.
  • Collaborate with constituents in University Recreation, APSU departments, and the local community.
  • Monitor the industry programming trends and implement new and inclusive activities.
  • Work with the Assistant Director to oversee the daily, weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance of the pool, including water chemistry, preventative maintenance, and large repairs/remodel projects
  • Ensure compliance and maintain records of pool chemicals and chemistry, pool permits, and local/state/federal regulations.
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with the Montgomery County Health Department
  • Maintain, repair, and replace Aquatics equipment, including the pool lift, furniture, swimming and safety equipment.
  • Oversee Aquatics budgets, including payroll, program/maintenance expenses, and tracking revenue.
  • Schedule and staff regular CPR/AED/FA courses for University Recreation employees
  • Work closely with the Associate Director to oversee the maintenance of all University Recreation first aid and blood borne pathogen (BBP) kits, bio-hazard disposal, AEDs, CPR/First Aid course materials/equipment, and medical response equipment.
  • Monitor changes and ensure adherence to OHSA, APSU, local, state, federal, Health Department, and American Red Cross regulations and standards.
  • Work to support that overall mission of University Recreation, Student Affairs, and APSU including active participation in University Recreation and campus-wide campaigns, initiatives, projects, and committees.
  • Remain competent and current through professional development to include self-directed reading, research and networking with colleagues.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements
  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree 
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and/or Lifeguarding with Professional Rescuer CPR
  • Experience lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, and/or instructing groups.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • A background check will be required of the successful applicant.

Certifications Helpful/Preferred in any of the following:
  • Certified Pool Operator/Aquatics Facility Operator or equivalent (must be obtained within first 90 days of hire),
  • Red Cross Instructor or Instructor Trainer for Lifeguarding/WSI/CPR, AED, First Aid
