Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Application Developer for the School of Arts and Sciences. The position reports to the Associate Director, Information Technology for Application and Web Development. The position also serves as a backup to the other Application Developer(s) in the SAS Information Technology Office. 
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Develops and/or modifies software and systems according to project specifications.
  • Reviews, advises, creates and updates the custom web application presence for the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS).
  • Evaluates and analyzes existing web applications and other software to provide for interim needs.
  • Studies work processes, including those not directly related to current systems and advise with respect to integrating existing data sources to provide secure online data access to faculty, staff and students.
  • Participates in collaborative development with IT staff and contribute to framework programming library.
  • Independently prepares technical project plans including, but not limited to: requirements, object definitions and models, schema diagrams, data flow diagrams, testing plans and use case scenarios.
  • Provides system documentation on both web/program code and application operation.
  • Independently researches and evaluates new techniques or technologies as appropriate and make recommendations to IT management regarding the use and application of these within the SAS IT framework/libraries. 
  • Handles other non-web related application development needs as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of web application programming experience using the following technologies: PHP, The Zend and Laravel PHP application frameworks, Query, JavaScript, HTML and CSS, PostgreSQL, Linux, and Subversion.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Python, Perl and bash shell scripting. 
  • Experience with Service Oriented Architecture and Microservices. 
  • Experience working with the .NET framework.
  • Experience building “serverless” web applications using Amazon Web Services. 
  • Knowledge of academic terms and processes.
