Position Description

The Application Developer is a member of the Computing team at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining software applications that support the teaching, research, and administrative goals of SEAS.

Responsibilities include meeting with users to determine needs and requirements, researching solutions to meet those requirements, then developing and deploying the applications. At application launch, the Application Developer ensures that institutional knowledge is shared with other members of the SEAS Computing team and operational support is defined so applications can be effectively supported. The Application Developer is also responsible for writing documentation for applications in terms of build, deployment, maintenance, testing, and end- user instructions.


Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong HTML and CSS experience
  • At least one year’s experience writing advanced JavaScript (ES6)
  • At least one year’s experience working with JavaScript application development frameworks, such as Angular, React or Vue
  • Experience building web-based applications for a variety of audiences
  • At least one years’ experience with server-side technologies including MongoDB, Express, and node.js Experience working in the Command-line in a Linux-shell environment
  • Critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Able to adapt to the rapidly changing technologies inherent in web development
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Customer service skills and service mindset
  • A strong commitment to web standards
  • Well-organized and detail-oriented
  • Experience working within Agile projects
  • Able to deliver high-quality and accurate work in a fast-paced and demanding environment
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds

  • The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences does not provide visa sponsorship for administrative and staff positions.
  • This position is based on our Allston, MA campus. The department is currently operating with a hybrid workplace model. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT).
