Position Description:

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who providing a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for the patients of the inpatient  services as a member of the Department of  Surgery- Trauma Surgery and Acute Care Surgery services.

The Department of Surgery – Trauma and Acute Care Surgery is seeking a part-time (.8 FTE) clinically strong and competent Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in emergency general surgery, critical decision making and ability to assess, diagnose and treat patients in an inpatient setting located at Froedtert Hospital.

The APP position requires a strong clinical competence in surgical critical care, critical decision making and ability to assess, diagnose and treat patients in an ICU setting. The APP will have a strong foundation in evidence-based practice and ensure an environment of safe quality care

Scheduling flexibility required to provide for an appropriate level of patient care coverage.  Coverage expectations for both weekday and weekend/holiday and evening rotational coverage.

 Primary Function/Responsibility

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring surgical intervention in inpatient environment as a member of the Surgical ICU team.
  • Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  • Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the surgical critical care surgery services.
  • Facilitates and communicates with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
  • Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.
  • Attends daily rounds with faculty and Surgical Critical Care physician team, presents 24 hour patient report.
  • Performs tertiary surveys.
  • Acts as a liaison for communication of care plans and discharge destinations from ICU to floor teams. Attends care coordination rounds as able.
  • Participates in Surgical Critical Care Surgery performance improvement activities to ensure the quality of care and effectiveness of service.

    Advanced Practice Nurse: Master’s Degree or higher in Nursing
    Physician Assistant: Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies
