About the Department
As part of the Land Grant University, the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology is composed of over 40 faculty members who direct a diverse portfolio of programs in teaching, research, and extension components. Collectively, these strengths not only serve our clientele and our science but also provide a rich environment for graduate education and training that can be tailored to the specific career interests of the student, irrespective of whether they prefer training in the basic sciences or are preparing for a career in extension. Our education and research programs provide graduate and undergraduate students with unique hands-on learning opportunities using the latest technologies.
Essential Job Duties
This position supports the research, extension, and teaching components of the NC State Apiculture Program. This position will be in charge of logistical arrangements and delivery of extension programming, oversight of apiculture research, and coordination of a summer REU internship program.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Managing several apiaries of honey bee colonies for a total of 50 – 250 hives by ordering and assembling any new beekeeping requirement, and moving bee colonies from apiary to apiary for research.
  • Assisting students, postdoctoral researchers, and part-time employees through various beekeeper extension programs for apiculture education.
  • Overseeing data collection and colony manipulation which includes requeening colonies, preventing swarming, and making splits.
  • Maintaining the research facilities including the grounds, apiaries, and other outdoor spaces utilized, and collecting colony data.
  • Serving as a liaison with local beekeeper groups and other interested stakeholders to coordinate and conduct numerous outreach events.
  • Creating social media content and web presence to generate stakeholder engagement.

This position is time-limited for 2 years.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated expertise in beekeeper education.
  • Working knowledge of social media, software, and video editing.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Adaptability and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Practical experience in apiculture science and honey bee management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with commercial apiculture.
Required License or Certification
  • A valid NC Driver’s License and the ability to obtain an NC Driver’s License within 60 days of hire.
  • A valid Driver’s License must be maintained throughout employment.
