Job Overview

The College of Medicine, Hoxworth Blood Center is recruiting an Apheresis Diploma Nurse in the Therapeutic Apheresis department. This position will support the University's mission and commitment to excellence and diversity in our students, faculty, staff, and all our activities.

 

The Registered Nurse will perform therapeutic apheresis procedures including peripheral blood stem cell collections and other specialized procedures on patients within our community.  The RN will be responsible for monitoring these patients throughout the treatment or in research collections.  Work involves both adult and pediatric patients.  Traveling between hospitals within our community to perform procedures is required. All requirements for hospital privileging must be met.  This job requires a positive attitude, excellent communication, and organizational skills as well as the ability to develop good customer-service relationships. Must have a current Ohio RN license and able to obtain other state licenses as needed.


Essential Functions
  • Interview and screen prospective donors apply FDA regulations, AABB standards, and adhere to regulations/standards of other governing bodies. 
  • Perform physical examinations and secure detailed medical history of prospective donors.
  • Monitor and assess blood collection process, assist with immediate and/or emergency care in case of a donor reaction.
  • Perform and monitor therapeutic apheresis procedures including plasma and red cell exchanges and photopheresis on patients of all ages.
  • Perform peripheral blood stem cell collections and other specialized collection procedures. 
  • Participate in research protocols.
  • Assist and perform quality control functions, maintain and calibrate equipment.
  • Communicate directly with donors; provide customer service following standard procedures.
  • Travel between hospitals within our community to perform procedures is required.

Minimum Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited registered nurse program.
  • Current OH RN license; must be able to obtain other state RN licenses as needed.
  • Experience in intensive care, emergency or dialysis nursing, or intravenous therapy.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Exposure to bio-hazardous products, chemicals and body fluids; may be exposed to unpleasant odors and adverse weather; may have to ambulate donor in cases of adverse reaction; may work evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call).
