The Anthropology Department at Capilano University invites applications for a teacher-scholar in cultural anthropology at the rank of Regular Full-Time Faculty to begin Sept 1, 2024. This is a full-time, permanent, unionized position. The successful candidate will join a small department undergoing major transitions following several planned retirements. Along with other recently-hired faculty, the successful candidate will collaboratively develop new courses and programming in Anthropology. Along with demonstrated excellence in university teaching, the successful candidate will have a minimum of a Masters in Anthropology. Preference will be given, however, to candidates with a Ph.D. in hand or near completion by the time of appointment.
Full teaching responsibility at Capilano is 8 teaching sections per year, with a maximum of 35 students per section. The successful candidate’s workload will include introductory level courses in cultural anthropology but with opportunities to develop and teach 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year courses that align with their research interests and areas of specialization.
Capilano University is currently undergoing an exciting phase of growth, with new programs under development across the Faculty of Arts and Sciences as well as growing support for faculty research. Recent initiatives include support for section releases, internal grants, and institutional support for external grant applications. Beyond this position’s core teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate is encouraged to actively develop an innovative research profile as well as engage in public-facing scholarship.

Fields of specialization are open; however, a research focus on health and well-being, and interest in ethnography and storytelling, and/or employing anti-racist, decolonial, or feminist approaches in their work are considered assets as well as the willingness and desire to involve students in research.
We invite applicants to submit a cover letter detailing teaching and research interests, CV, teaching portfolio, and names and contact information of three references. In their teaching portfolio, candidates should include a statement of teaching philosophy and provide evidence of their ability to foster and equitable and inclusive community within the University.
Applicants who are invited to interview will be asked to submit three letters of recommendation and at least one sample syllabus. Applicants will also be asked to prepare a short teaching demo for the interview.
