Job Summary

Independent of supervision in a hospital setting, as a significant part of daily duties, be responsible for treatment of patients with life threatening illness or injury, whose conditions change on a moment-to-moment basis. Under general direction of the Small Animal Internal Medicine Service Supervisor, this position will serve as a technical coordinator for the Small Animal Internal Medicine Service. Responsibilities include providing nursing and technical support for any advanced endoscopic and surgical procedures, diagnostic procedures, facilitating scheduling of Small Animal Internal Medicine patients for appointments, endoscopic procedures and surgery, client/referring veterinarian communication and record keeping within the Small Animal Internal Medicine Service.

 

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Stand, bend, kneel, squat, reach above shoulder level and move about on hard surfaces up to 8 or 10 hours each day.
  • Ability to acutely discern heart and lung sounds using a stethoscope.
  • Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Handle and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Contact with animals (sometimes fractious) as required.
  • Ability to transport patients in carriers, on leashes, on gurneys and move patients on and off gurneys and in and out of cages.
  • May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work occasional overtime and various hours on short notice (including covering staff shortages, weekend and holiday shifts).
  • Work under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients.
  • Work in high traffic areas, confined, or small spaces, noisy environments and tolerate unpleasant odors.
  • May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum License/Certification:

 

  • Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) within 3 months of hire.

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

 

  • Experience working in a Small Animal Hospital as a veterinary technician or veterinary assistant with experience collecting diagnostic samples and animal restraint.

 

  • Experience communicating with clients and referring DVM.

 

  • Experience working independently, in a hospital setting, providing intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill or anesthetized patients.

 

  • Experience coordinating and scheduling procedures that involve multiple individuals, teams and shared resources.

 

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  • Strong organizational skills.

 

  • Oral & written communication skills to understand, and interpersonal skills to work with a diverse group of people to include clients, clinicians, students, referring DVMs, and staff.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification:

 

  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.

 

Preferred Education/Experience:   

 

  • Experience with common canine and feline endoscopic procedures, patient preparation, supplies and equipment to include rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy, gastroscopy, duodenoscopy, colonoscopy & ileoscopy, urethrocystoscopy, laparoscopy as well as interventional procedures such as stenting, ballooning and contrast studies performed using fluoroscopy.

 

  • Experience with common endoscopic equipment and instrumentation handling, operation, function, troubleshooting, cleaning and maintenance.
