    Job Summary
    Under general supervision of the Large Animal Patient Care Manager, function as a lead technician which includes coordination of surgical cases, student schedules, safety training, timekeeping, and liaison with Client Services. Maintain supplies & equipment, maintaining quality control, creating and maintaining SOP's, training new staff members, establishing relationships with vendors to facilitate purchases and repairs. Responsible for OR set up, operations and troubleshooting of various specialized surgical equipment. Set up, operate and trouble shoot various specialized equipment such as Arthroscopy Towers, endoscopic towers with cameras and insufflation, and various high speed and ultrasonic drills as wells various standard surgical equipment. Perform and instruct students on aseptic surgical site preparation and patient positioning. Break down the operating rooms and clean per hospital protocol as needed. Instruct students in appropriate operating room protocols. Responsible for radiation safety during the operation of radiation producing equipment in the OR. Responsible for following all hospital safety protocols. Ability to handle and restrain patients (equines, llamas & alpacas and livestock). Provide technical support for patient induction, surgeries & recoveries.
    Applicants will be screened on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • Must be able to move or restrain conscious and anesthetized or large domestic animals, including fractious horses.
    • This position may, at times, require the individual to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious disease are present.
    • Must be able to lift/maneuver up to 75 lbs. with assistance.
    • Specific hazards of the position are listed in the VMTH Safety Training document and are reviewed with the individual annually.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT
    • May work variable shifts including swings, nights, weekend, holidays and time on call.
    • May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: boots, gowns, lab coats, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.
    • Requires working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, &/or infectious diseases including zoonotic diseases, cleaning chemicals, gaseous anesthetics, radioactive patients & distraught clients.
    • The work environment requires you to be exposed to outdoor elements including but not limited to cold, heat, smoke, rain, etc.
    • Work in crowded areas where strong odors are present, where exposure to bodily fluids & waste from domestic farm animals will occur.
    • This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
    • Flexibility to work with new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and/or modalities

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Minimum License/Certification:
    • Must obtain Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) within 3 months of hire.

    Minimum Education/Experience:
    • Experience handling complications of various surgical procedures; anticipating and responding quickly to surgeon and patient needs.

    • Prior experience working in a veterinary hospital setting in a surgical environment and experience with aseptic technique and surgical instruments.

    • Experience handling, restraining & working with horses, cattle, sheep, goats and porcine species (sick and healthy) to ensure safety & effectiveness.

    Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
    • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with individuals of varying ages, cultural backgrounds, and perspectives to secure and/or provide information to clarify situations, resolve problems, make referrals, as it pertains to standard operating room policies and procedures.

    • Knowledge of basic computer skills; creating schedules, email correspondence, Microsoft applications: Word & Excel.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    Preferred Education/Experience:
    • Experience using Veterinary Medical & Administrative Computer System (VMACS)

    • Experience creating SOPs and checklists.

    • Experience with common large animal surgical procedures, instruments used for various procedures, patient preparation and equipment.

    • Experience driving forklifts.
