Position Focus:

Reporting to the Training Manager, Yale Animal Resources Center, the trainer will provide, coordinate, and assess staff training in accordance with the YARC Training Program and standard operating procedures, regulatory guidelines, institutional, local, and federal policies.

Essential Duties:
1.  Effectively train and assess staff in husbandry of all YARC species, sanitation, humane euthanasia, and vivarium tasks via individual, classroom, or group sessions. Strong ability to change the delivery of information based on an individual’s needs that maximizes efficiency. 
2.  Attentively monitor and assess learning progress, including process metrics. Confidentially communicate development and/or deficiencies to trainees and management in a timely manner.
3.  Oversee assignments completed by trainees and grade level trainers to ensure work has been completed according to departmental standards and that deficiencies are corrected and reported in a timely manner.
4.  Assess complex situations and act independently to resolve the issue with tact. Know when to escalate situations to management.
5. Coordinate, create, and conduct specialized training and cross training for staff and researchers. Perform retraining of staff upon request from unit managers.  Manage documentation according to University and federal policies.
6. Create, prepare, or edit training content (e-learning or written).
7. Ensure SOPs are current and compliant with University, federal, and local polices.
8. Oversee and coordinate projects or work processes, such as SOP Focus Groups.
9. Train staff in adjustments to work procedures that ensure production optimization and high-quality animal care. Delegate training to grade level trainers. 
10. Make recommendations for programmatic changes that facilitate the effective training of staff.
11. Conduct Individual SOP Reviews with staff and write up assessment for management.
12. Provide task and training time requirements to Schedulers for coordination of assignments.
13. Train staff in computer use, this includes Microsoft Office Suite and Yale specific systems.
14. Train staff to observe and evaluate animals for signs of illness, stress or deviations in welfare conditions and administer prescribed treatments. 
15. Onboard new staff according to departmental and university requirements.
16. Will perform additional related tasks as necessary.
17. Perform husbandry when operationally necessary.

Essential Duties

1. Provide administrative leadership of a unit or function, including overseeing and coordinating projects or work processes, and distributing and monitoring the work of at least 2 regular FTEs as a lead worker. 2. Act as expert resource to investigators and staff in one or more areas of animal technology. For example: 3. Develop, implement, coordinate, oversee and/or maintain complex departmental projects such as rederivation and cryopreservation; BL 3 operations. 4. Working with managers coordinate complex experimental procedures for investigators which involve specialized techniques such as surgical procedures. 5. Observe and evaluate animals for signs of illness and stress and deviations in animal conditions. Feed, house and handle animals in accordance with institutional, local and Federal regulations. 6. Provide research and technical support to investigators. Conduct or oversee procedures such as blood collection, injections and/or routine surgical procedures. Prepare reports and provide updates to investigators regarding the status of animals. 7. Using protocols established by PI or manager, manage and maintain breeding colonies for research. Establish and carry out strategic breeding plans according to specific protocols or instructions. 8. Maintain detailed records regarding animal colonies such as births, deaths, weaning, and breeding and other records required by institutional, local and federal regulations. 9. Train and/or instruct staff on sanitation, animal handling, restraint and care techniques, appropriate to level. 10. Maintain a working liaison with other appropriate departments/units across campus. 11. Perform additional related tasks as necessary.


Required Education and Experience

Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated ability to train staff, students, or researchers. Demonstrated ability with coordinating work of others. Well-developed interpersonal skills; proven experience working within a team.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated ability working with multiple species and understanding of cage wash. Sensitivity to and appreciation of research animals. Ability to recognize signs of animal well-being, illness, and abnormalities. Ability to pull 70 lbs.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Well-rounded verbal and written communication skills. Accuracy, reliability, and good attention to detail.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Computer skills (Outlook, Excel, Word, Workday, SharePoint, PowerPoint).


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Good attendance record.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Working knowledge of husbandry/sanitation procedures. Two years of training experience. Experience creating training plans. Working knowledge of SOPs.


Required Licenses or Certifications

Must possess a valid driver's license.


Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to pull 70 lbs.
