ANIMAL LABORATORY SPECIALIST II

The Animal Resources Program (ARP) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks an Animal Laboratory Specialist II who will perform all duties essential to the proper care of laboratory animals and specialized colonies within assigned areas. This position will work within the technical team as an Animal Laboratory Specialist II to provide animal care consistent with animal species requirements and established guidelines in the yellow room area. The position will be responsible for the upkeep, and general maintenance of the equipment or systems to perform physical assessments on animals and recognize signs of illness, and other duties as assigned. The position may involve any of the following: filing and organizing health records for a campus-wide health surveillance program to maintain detailed records of colonies and maintain daily animal and room census records. The position may require reporting to internal and external agencies to ensure adherence to Federal, State, and UAB procedures and requirements.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  • Applies knowledge of animal biology and husbandry experience in the daily care of laboratory animals within a specialized area in accordance with the requirements of each animal species
  • Management of species could vary depending upon specialized groups but may include working with species within aquatic tanks, isolators, containment, etc
  • Manages of colony, which could include breeding, weaning, fostering, etc
  • May perform basic research techniques such as sample collections, animal ID, colony production records, and data
  • Assists with equipment maintenance, upkeep, and testing of systems that house specialized colonies (i.e. water tanks, isolators, etc.)
  • Maintains the inventory of laboratory supplies and may perform minor preventative maintenance repair and coordinates major repair with the vendor or UAB Maintenance Compiles SOP for the area as well as AURF (Animal Use Requirement Forms) and may assist in grant writing
  • Assists in filing and organizing health records for campus-wide health surveillance program
  • Maintains detailed records of colonies in daily animal and room census records
  • This activity could include food entry/exit, waste removal, disposition of animals, weaning, breeding, etc
  • Manages receipt of newly procured animals and colony records. Serves as specialized area contact and as a resource for any and all staff and guests
  • May conduct tours and/or be called upon to provide knowledge to various groups which could include posters, presentations, or speaking engagements
  • Maintains knowledge of any training requirements set forth within ARP and/or related to the specialized animal species
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

 

Hourly Range: $16.50-$26.80

 

Qualifications

 

High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience required; Work experience MAY NOT substitute for education requirement. Currently certified at any level by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) required.
