What we want

The Animal Caretaker II, under supervision, performs best practices in infection prevention by cleaning and disinfecting animal housing facilities, related corridors, and equipment within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Assists with maintaining a clean, sanitary, and functionally well-organized service area within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Assists with basic animal husbandry practices for patients.

Work Schedule: Candidates must have the ability to work alternative shifts, holidays, weekends, and on-call duty.

Other Requirements or Factors: Must have the ability to work around animals, hay, or dust. Ability to move heavy loads.

Essential Personnel: This position is considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless or until relieved by their direct supervisor.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Two years of experience in animal care

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Experience:

  • More than two years’ experience in animal handling or animal care

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills

  • Basic knowledge of equipment used in a veterinary teaching Hospital

  • Ability to work well with others in a teaching environment

Responsibilities:

Cleaning and Disinfection - Infection prevention best practices- Maintains proper infection prevention control by following infection prevention policies.  Maintains clean, disinfected and organized patient wards, corridors, and hospital common areas.  Maintains clean and professional appearance of the small animal hospital exterior sidewalks, yards, flowerbeds, and outdoor furniture areas. Follows appropriate disposal techniques for all potential biohazard items

Maintain a safe, sanitary, well-organized service areas - Keeps accurate inventory for service area.  Enters fees in accurate and in timely manner in the VMTH electronic medical record. Provides cleaning and disinfection support of service area and small animal hospital. Provides Biohazard management and transportation within the hospital.  Assist in creating food and supply orders

Animal Husbandry - Assisting faculty, staff and students with patient care such as walking, feeding and bathing patients. Assists in ensuring all patients are in appropriate and clean kennels.

           

Required Training, Complance, and Administrative Procedures -

  • Completes required TrainTraqs by Texas A&M and VMTH  

  • Enters time and leave entry into workday accurately and on time

  • Maintains email correspondence and teams’ notifications

  • Assists in maintaining the School and Hospital Accreditations (AVMA) 

  • Assists in maintaining research compliance guidelines (IACUC, USDA, AALAC) 

  • Participates in preparing for all hospital inspections

Other Duties - Assists in other departments as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
