Animal Care Technician, Division of Comparative Medicine, Georgetown University Medical Center

Georgetown’s Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) oversees the Research Resource Facility (RRF) which supports animal research and teaching activities for the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) and the Main Campus.

The Animal Care Technician supports Georgetown University’s research vision and mission by providing a compliant and ethical research facility to conduct biomedical research - and specifically, the division’s animal husbandry in support of animal research initiatives. Reporting directly to the Animal Care Supervisor, they have duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Handle, feed, and water animals
  • Change cages and monitor health of laboratory animals
  • Operate cages, washing machines, autoclaves and other facility equipment
  • Sanitize areas and/or equipment according to schedule
  • Follow standard operating procedures and maintain compliance with applicable biomedical research laws and regulations
  • Completes required documentation, including monthly logs, checklists and animal census
  • Assist with laundry of scrub uniforms and lab coats
  • As assigned and appropriate to the position, perform other duties and responsibilities appropriate to the position and area

Work Interactions

Reporting directly to the Animal Care Supervisor, the Animal Care Technician also interacts the Director of the Division of Comparative Medicine, the Facility Manager, and other animal care technicians, veterinary technicians, veterinarians and research faculty and staff.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Verbal and written communication skills in English for reading, following instructions and otherwise conducting business

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience working with animals
  • American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AAALAS) certification

Physical environment

The Animal Care Technician works in a designated work area, and spends a significant amount of time in the animal facility with possible exposure to biological hazards, chemicals, and laboratory animals. Environment is extremely warm/steaming and has animals/animal odors. Duties require lifting up to 50 pounds and repetitive bending, twisting and pushing motions.
