Animal Care Technician, Division of Comparative Medicine - Georgetown University Medical Center
The Animal Care Technician supports Georgetown University’s research vision and mission by providing a compliant and ethical research facility to conduct biomedical research in support of animal research initiatives in duties that include but are not limited to:
- Performs daily husbandry for laboratory animals, including handling, feeding, watering, changing cages and monitoring heath of laboratory animals
- Follow standard operating procedures and maintain compliance with applicable laws and regulations
- Assist with cage wash and autoclave operation and sanitizes areas and/or equipment
Work Interactions
Reporting to the Animal Care Supervisor, the Facility manager, and Director of the Division of Comparative Medicine, the Animal Care Technician interacts with other animal care technicians, veterinary technicians, veterinarians and research faculty and staff.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalency
- Verbal and written communication skills for reading and following instructions – and engaging in business discussions
Preferred qualifications
- Experience working with animals
- American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AAALAS) certification
Work Environment The Animal Care Technician works in a designated work area, and also spends a significant amount of time in the animal facility where they may be exposed to biological hazards, chemicals, and laboratory animals. They occasionally lift 50 pounds, work in hot and/or steamy environments, work with animals/animal odors, and perform work that involves repetitive bending, twisting and pushing motions.
