Animal Care Technician – Division of Comparative Medicine – Georgetown University Medical Center

Georgetown University’s Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) oversees the Research Resource Facility (RRF) which supports animal research and teaching activities for the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) and the Main Campus. Its mission is to provide state of the art facilities and quality animal care to support biomedical research and teaching missions of the University, and to comply with all applicable animal welfare regulations and guidelines. DCM also advises and educates researchers, staff and students regarding animal models and biomethodology while promoting best practices for the responsible use of animals.

Job Overview

The Animal Care Technician supports the Division of Comparative Medicine’s animal husbandry function in support of animal research initiatives in duties that include are not limited to:

• Perform daily husbandry for laboratory animals, including handling, feeding, watering, changing cages and monitoring heath of laboratory animals
• Follow standard operating procedures and maintain compliance with applicable laws and regulations
• Assist with cage wash and autoclave operation and sanitize areas and/or equipment

Work Interactions

As directed by the Animal Care Supervisor, the Animal Care Technician supports the Director of the Division of Comparative Medicine and the Facility Manager in their research vision and mission by providing a compliant and ethical research facility to conduct biomedical research.

As well, they interact with other animal care technicians, veterinary technicians, veterinarians and research faculty and staff.

Requirements and Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalency
• Ability to spend a significant amount of time in the animal facility where they may be exposed to biological hazards, chemicals, and laboratory animals
• Ability lift 50 pounds, to work in hot and/or steamy environments, to work with animals/animal odors, and to perform work that involves repetitive bending, twisting and pushing motions.
• Verbal and written communications skills for reading and following instructions in English

Preferred qualifications

• Experience working with animals
• AAALAS certification
