Description of Work Unit
The CSU VTH exists to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community 24/7/365. This work unit exists to care for the basic needs of the animals at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and to provide routine disinfection and service within the hospital, which serves as a teaching facility for veterinary students, as a medical facility for veterinary research, and as a public animal health clinic for exotic, large and small animals.
Position Summary
This position exists to perform daily cleaning and disinfection of the Critical Care Unit. This also includes basic animal care and veterinary assistance for both PVM students, staff and faculty and residents.
Note to Applicants: 
This position will be filling the Monday – Friday, 4 pm – 12 am shift.

  • One year of experience caring for, feeding, or providing health care for animals in a veterinary laboratory, breeding or boarding facility.

Essential Job Duties


Job Duty Category Clean and Disinfect Clinical Area Surfaces
Duty/Responsibility
Clean and disinfect cages and runs, exam and treatment tables, gurneys, cabinets and counters, and sinks within the Critical Care Unit to maintain sanitary conditions and prevent disease transmission. Scrub surfaces to remove blood, feces, hair, tissue, urine, vomit, etc. Scrub and clean dirty dishes and restock when cleaned. Pull and remove recycle and trash. Return soiled laundry to Central Laundry, and return cleaned laundry to CCU. Dust and disinfect exam lights, viewing windows and ledges, phones, canisters and miscellaneous equipment. Stock assigned areas with Animal Care, custodial and medical supplies; such as, but not limited to, pet food, cat litter, clean laundry, paper towels, soap, disinfectant, syringes, needles, gauze, gloves, etc.

Duty/Responsibility
Assists clinicians, students and technicians with procedures, including animal restraint, treatments, and lab test sample collection. Assist in the transport of patients. Feed, exercise, and observe animals in assigned areas. Clean cages as kennels thru-out the day as needed in Critical Care. Monitor animals for signs of distress, abnormal behaviors, or increased signs of illness; observe urine output and feces. Report any problems or concerns to clinicians, students and technicians.

Sweep and mop all floors with disinfectant throughout the entire assigned area, in order to remove blood, feces, hair, urine, vomit, etc. Machine scrub floors monthly to maintain a clean and sanitary appearance.

Job Duty Category Ensure Cleanliness of Animal Runs and Kennels
Duty/Responsibility
Ensure sanitary and comfortable conditions for animals in assigned areas by cleaning and disinfecting animal holding areas including kennels, cages, runs, treatment surfaces, walls, and floors using hoses and automatic disinfectant dispensers and scrub brushes. Remove contaminated dog blankets, transport to laundry area. Ensure they are kept separate from surgical laundry to prevent contamination. Clean and disinfect kitchen area, utensils. Clean and disinfect treatment room surfaces, floors, pull trash and laundry. Inventory and stock food, supplements, and kitchen utensils. Note expiration dates to maintain current stocks of food and other perishable items. Stock clean laundry, cat litter, and all other kennel supplies. Stock hand-soap, paper towels, disinfectant, detergents and other custodial supplies. Follow VTH and biosecurity protocol as needed in the case of suspected infectious disease.
