Minimum Qualifications Required: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Any one or combination totaling four (4) years (48 months) from the categories below:
  • course work in animal science, biological science, veterinary technology, zoology, or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent
  • 60 semester hours or an Associate’s Degree equals two (2) years (24 months
  • 120 semester hours or a Bachelor’s degree equals three (3) years (36 months)
  • work experience in an animal care facility which could include a research laboratory, veterinary hospital, veterinary clinic, intensive or industrial animal farm, or closely related experience.
  • Two (2) years (24 months) of supervisory or administrative experience in an animal care facility which could include a research laboratory, veterinary hospital, veterinary clinic, intensive or industrial animal farm, or closely related experience.
  • Current and valid LAT Level Certification from American Association Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).  Certification must be uploaded.  
  • Preferred Qualifications:

    • Thorough knowledge of basic biology and care of laboratory animals
    • Knowledge of federal regulations affecting animal care facilities
    • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
    • Requires thorough knowledge of good laboratory animal care principles and proven knowledge of the biology and care of common laboratory animals, appropriate means of sanitizing animal rooms and cages, principles of disease control and prevention and environmental monitoring.
    • Ability to supervise lower level personnel and maintain accurate records.
    • Ability to train, instruct, or discuss animal care procedures with caretakers, staff, or faculty. Strong communication, leadership, and supervisory skills required.
    • Effective judgement required to set priorities based on needs of specific animals, projects, and the colony as a whole with ability to respond to emergency situations.
    • Ability to make decisions and take appropriate corrective action essential to job.
    • Ability to evaluate sanitation practices and animal care procedures in the animal facility. Ability to exhibit strong organizational skills and maintain detailed, accurate records and evaluate animal facility records and to prepare reports on facility activities.
