Anesthesiology Residency Program Director

Position Description:

Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Anesthesiology is currently searching for a Residency Program Director to oversee our program which consists of 60 Residents and 30 Fellows. Consistent with the description by the ACGME of the role of program directors, the Residency Program Director of the Anesthesiology Residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin will be responsible for the entirety of the residency program and all departmental fellowship programs. He/she will have authority and accountability for the overall program, including, but not limited to, compliance with all applicable program requirements.

Program Director Roles and Responsibilities:

As the leader of the program, the Program Director must serve as a role model to residents in addition to fulfilling the technical aspects of the role. As residents are expected to demonstrate compassion, integrity, and respect for others, they must be able to look to the program director as an exemplar. It is of utmost importance, therefore, that the program director model outstanding professionalism, high quality patient care, educational excellence, and a scholarly approach to work. The program director creates an environment where respectful discussion is welcome, with the goal of continued improvement of the educational experience.

The program director will have responsibility, authority, and accountability for: administration and operations; teaching and scholarly activity; resident recruitment and selection, evaluation, and promotion of residents, and disciplinary action; supervision of residents; and resident education in the context of patient care. As such, the program director will have the salary support required to devote 40 percent of his or her time to the administration of the program and will spend the other 60 percent of their time on clinical and/or research efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and conduct the program consistent with the needs of the community, the missions of Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), Froedtert Hospital and Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals (MCWAH) and the missions of the program.
  • Particularly the program will focus on improving the health of the public, with the goal of addressing the needs and health disparities of our community.
  • Maintain a learning environment conducive to educating the residents in each of the ACGME Competency domains.
  • Establish a leadership team to assist in the accomplishment of program goals. The leadership team may include physician and non-physician personnel with varying levels of education, training, and experience.
  • Develop and oversee a process to evaluate program faculty members’ participation in the residency program education.
  • Approve program faculty members who effectively role model the Core Competencies for participation in the residency program education at all sites and remove faculty members who do not meet the standards of the clinical learning environment.
  • Remove residents from supervising interactions and/or learning environments that do not meet the standards of the program.
  • Develop the rotational schedule for each resident and ensure that all residents in the program have similar experiences in the residency.
  • Ensure that residents meet the required number of cases in each subspecialty.
  • Submit accurate and complete information required and requested by the ABA, the DIO, GMEC, and ACGME
  • Provide the ABA with information related to the resident’s eligibility for the board examinations.
  • Provide a learning and working environment in which residents have the opportunity to raise concerns and provide feedback in a confidential manner as appropriate, without fear of intimidation or retaliation.
  • Ensure the program’s compliance with the Froedtert Hospital and MCWAH policies and procedures related to grievances and due process.
  • Ensure the program’s compliance with the Froedtert Hospital and MCWAH policies and procedures for due process when action is taken to suspend or dismiss, not to promote, or not to renew the appointment of a resident.
  • Understand the Froedtert Hospital and MCWAH policies and procedures and will ensure they are followed by the program’s leadership, faculty members, support personnel, and residents.
  • Ensure the program’s compliance with the Froedtert Hospital and MCWAH policies and procedures on employment and non-discrimination.
  • Document verification of program completion for all graduating residents within 30 days.
  • Provide verification of an individual resident’s completion upon the resident’s request, within 30 days; and obtain review and approval of MCWAH’s DIO before submitting information or requests to the ACGME.

Department of Anesthesiology
The Department of Anesthesiology at MCW includes 120 clinical faculty members, 10 active research faculty members, 66 residents and 17 fellows in pediatric anesthesia, cardiac anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, critical care, regional acute pain and pain medicine. Affiliated clinical sites include Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (CHW), Zablocki Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC), Wheaton Franciscan St. Joseph’s Hospital, Community Memorial Hospital, and several ambulatory surgery centers in SE Wisconsin. The Department also staffs the VAMC surgical ICU and the Cardiovascular ICU at Froedtert. The faculty provides more than 63,000 anesthetics annually in more than 100 anesthetizing locations on any given day, considering all affiliate hospitals, operating rooms, and out-of-the-OR locations.

MCWAH is a free-standing, non-profit corporation established in 1980 to facilitate the administration of graduate medical education (GME) programs conducted jointly by the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and 10 health care institutions in Wisconsin. Kenneth B. Simons, MD is the Executive Director and Designated Institutional Official (DIO) of MCWAH and the Sr. Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education and Accreditation, MCW.

The MCWAH office has two primary functions:

  • Manage the MCWAH corporation that employs housestaff (residents and fellows) while enrolled in GME programs and
  • Oversee the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited GME programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Leading a program requires knowledge and skills that are established during residency and subsequently further developed through academic faculty positions and smaller administrative roles. The Program Director will have completed his or her residency and fellowship at three years before assuming this role. The time period from completion of residency until becoming program director allows cultivation of leadership abilities and professional maturation.

Strong leaders arise through diverse pathways. These areas of expertise are important when identifying and appointing a program director. The choice of a program director should be informed by the mission of the program and the needs of the community.

A program director is a role model for faculty members, residents and staff. The program director must participate in clinical activity consistent with the specialty. This activity will allow the program director to role model the Core Competencies for the faculty members and residents.

The successful individual will have at least three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience; will have current certification in by the American Board of Anesthesiology, current medical licensure and appropriate medical staff appointment; and, must include ongoing clinical activity. 

The Program Director will continue to demonstrate ongoing academic achievements in anesthesiology, including publications, the development of educational programs, and the conduct of research.
