Scope of Position

This position is responsible for leading the initiation planning execution and closure phases of the project life cycle for healthcare analytic projects involving multiple technologies multiple systems business unit functions and stakeholders. Projects range in size from medium to large complex efforts in support of strategic business goals and objectives for the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC).

Applies project management knowledge skills tools and techniques to project and program activities in order to meet analytic related delivery requirements against a baseline of cost schedule and scope.

Position Summary

As a member of the OSUWMC Analytics Center of Excellence (ACE) the Project Manager is a leader of analytics projects covering clinical patient care, education and shared services (e.g. clinical operations, labor productivity, quality measurement, etc.). The Project Manager leads these projects through initiation planning execution and closure phases as they move from design to build to installation go-live training and ultimately into the customer’s operational state. Analytics initiatives at the OSU Wexner Medical Center involve multiple technologies integrated systems business unit functions and customers. The Project Manager performs the essential functions required to ensure consistent quality successful delivery of assigned projects while managing competing demands of scope schedule cost risk quality and stakeholder expectations.

The Project Manager will have a solid core skill set as well as the ability to interact with all levels of staff executives and possibly even patients. The Project Manager will need to have the ability to balance and coordinate numerous priorities and demonstrate qualities of trust teamwork and transparency while ensuring that every project is managed to maximize customer satisfaction.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES –

50 % of time spent

  • Performs as a project lead, experience in managing cross-functional teams with responsibilities for project schedule and performance. Directly contributes to project definition, development and/or enhancement efforts including cost management/avoidance, schedule estimation and tracking, contract performance management, risk management, requirements analysis, and quality assurance activities.
  • Performs analysis of business and user needs, documentation of requirements, and translation into proper requirements specifications
  • Ensures proper performance of tasks necessary to achieve the most efficient and effective execution of the project objectives.
  • Utilizes expert communication skills needed to direct the skilled technical resources and report on the technical progress, issues, and problem areas, as well as write and review technical documents. 
  • Prepares affected business areas for transition to new way of working; potentially implementing new business processes
  • Communicates status with leadership and customers.  

30% of time spent

  • Monitors and manages project baseline to ensure activities are occurring as planned - scope, budget and schedule – manages variances
  • Proactively identifies risks and issues on projects - leading team to develop risk management and issues management plans
  • Identifies potential points of contention for missed deliverables; creates and implements strategy to mitigate shortfalls in timeline and budget
  • Anticipates problems before they occur; defines the problem or risk; identifies possible causes; works with team to identify solutions; selects and implements most appropriate solution
  • Develops and manages plans to address project strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats
  • Balances both the "science" of how to perform project management and the "art" of program/project management, which is learned through experience and skill training/application
  • Demonstrate business analytics to manage and meet sponsor and customer needs

  • 20% of time spent:
  • Interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.  
  • Answers technical questions regarding products and services, and may take part in putting together proposals, configurations and product offerings. 
  • Acts as a leader and may manage the work of others. 

Skills –

  • Experience of managing IT projects with personal accountability for delivering to time and cost for large, complex projects typically more than $1m in value and 6 months in duration
  • Mastery of project management methodology, tools and templates (includes program/project planning, schedule development, scope management and cost management)
  • Track record of customer focus, based on openness, trust, and delivering on promises
  • Analytical skills and problem solving skills needed to manage multiple factors on a project simultaneously
  • Ability to work highly matrixed, multi-functional IT organization
  • Management skills to manage one or more large, complex projects simultaneously
  • IT background with experience across the systems development life cycle with experience in all project phases – plan, initiate, elaborate, design, build, test, implement.
  • Mastery knowledge and use of industry-standard project methods, tools and techniques e.g. RAIDS, budget, communication
  • Working knowledge of market-leading data analytics tools such as – Azure, AWS, Tableau, PowerBI, is desired but not required
  • Experience of delivering enterprise-scale data analytics projects
  • Strong team working skills across matrixed client, supplier and geographically dispersed virtual teams
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills (includes negotiation)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills – must be able to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing
  • Leader in the use of IT methodologies, processes and standards for project management
  • Critical thinking skills are an absolute must, and it is imperative that individual develop "out of the box" solutions for seemingly ordinary problems.
  • Superior time management, interpersonal and personal management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others, strong teamwork, and leadership skills

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science Business Information Technology or relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Five (5+) years’ experience of formal project leadership with various project lifecycle methodologies (waterfall agile iterative etc.).
  • Strong political and people skills to effectively communicate and manage change.
  • Demonstrated experience as a Project Manager producing and managing project delivery documentation with an emphasis on formal project lifecycle and SDLC documents.
  • Proficiency in the utilization of project management scheduling tools (e.g. MS project CA Clarity PlanView etc.) is required.
  • Analytical skills to identify problems and offer solutions.
  • PMP certification required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire date

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in entrepreneurship, economics, or equivalent course of study.
  • Healthcare, Managed Care and/or Insurance experience.
