Position Focus:

The Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) oversees approximately 50 departments and programs that compose the FAS, including the ladder and non-ladder faculty who teach in those departments and programs and all other academic appointees in those units. The FAS Dean’s Office approves and supports FAS faculty recruitment and hiring, as well as appointment and reappointment policies and procedures for all its academic ranks. In addition, the Dean oversees the activities and decisions that shape the quality of the faculty and the stature of the FAS departments, including faculty promotions, retentions, and compensation.

The Strategic Analysis Analyst will be responsible for data analysis related to the mission of the FAS Dean’s Office. The position will consist of serving the operational data needs of the FAS and triaging and responding to requests for information from the Dean of the FAS, the FAS Divisional Deans, and the FAS department Chairs and other university leadership.

The analyst will be expected to collaborate with other analysts in the FAS and maintain and further develop the quality and accessibility of institutional data related to the FAS. This position will collect, refine, manage, analyze, and visualize data from internal and external information systems, surveys, and data stewards. 

The analyst will need to be comfortable independently prioritizing multiple requests across a diverse set of constituents and balancing the timeliness and precision of analysis. Collaborating with stakeholders and decision-makers to understand their objectives and challenges will prepare and present data.


Essential Duties

1.  Leads strategic projects, including: collaborate closely with client groups inside Yale to determine objectives and key questions; develop an analytical plan that will answer those questions; interact regularly with clients to share interim results and refine the plan. 2.  Designs and executes research and analysis using academic, operational, and financial data. 3.  Understands and mines existing databases to extract data. 4.  Generates new data where none exists, for example through web research, interviews, and surveys. 5.  Analyzes data with a variety of methods, including statistical analysis and Excel modeling. 6.  Develops clear and compelling presentations using graphics and text. 7.  Conducts meetings with small groups, including high-level audiences (e.g., Deans and Yale Officers) to communicate findings and solicit input. 8.  Stays abreast of developments at Yale and in higher education, developing both internal and external networks of peers. 9. May perform other duties as required.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in statistics, computer science or a related field. 


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Strong analytical and quantitative skills demonstrated through a record of coursework and other activities.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Proven ability to work independently on several projects of varying scope at the same time while prioritizing and meeting deadlines. Proven ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, confidentiality, and discretion.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Proactive resourceful self-starter, detail-oriented, and with the proven ability to multi-task and learn quickly while working in a fast-paced environment. 


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. Proven ability to communicate to non-technical audiences. Proven ability to work both independently & collaboratively, interacting with a diverse array of faculty, students & staff. 


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Statistical analysis skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, in particular Excel and PowerPoint. Proven ability to create data visualizations for presentations. High degree of attention to detail.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Demonstrated experience coding and executing queries against relational databases. Demonstrated experience with R and/or Python. Any proven experience with Tableau, Power BI and SQL database is a plus.
