Description of Work Unit
Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Student Disability Center (SDC) is a department within the Office for Inclusive Excellence, specifically one of the seven Student Diversity Programs and Services(SDPS) offices that support underrepresented students at Colorado State University(CSU). The SDC is responsible for the assessment, recommendation, and provision of academic accommodations for students with disabilities, including those with chronic, physical, or mental health conditions. In addition, SDC acts as an advocate on behalf of disabled students to promote and support inclusive activities and policies in response to federal mandates of non-discrimination. SDC acts as a partner with students, faculty, and staff to ensure students with disabilities are afforded an equal opportunity to benefit from, and participate in, all activities and programs sponsored by the university with an emphasis on retention and graduation.
Position Summary
This position serves as a significant support for the Student Disability Center. Byproviding access to students, staff, faculty, and guests who are Deaf and Hard ofHearing at Colorado State University. The American Sign Language (ASL) interpreteris responsible for facilitating communication between hearing and Deaf individuals inclassrooms, labs, meetings, and other assignments.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) beyond a conversational register.
  • Minimum 1 year interpreting experience.
  • Experience effectively working in a team environment.
  • Ensure that policies and procedures are compliant with Section 504 and theADA.
  • Ability to provide and respond to feedback effectively and constructively.
  • Strong interpersonal and positive leadership skills.
  • Actively working on attaining National Interpreter Certificate from the Registryof Interpreters for the Deaf.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • 3 years’ experience providing ASL interpreting for students in higher education.
  • Interpretation of highly complex and technical information with a lexicon of advanced University level courses.
  • National Interpreter Certification from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, or an equivalent thereof.
