Job Summary

UCSF Aquatics makes life better here by inspiring fitness & providing opportunities to learn to swim through safe, fun, & diverse programming.  UCSF boasts three swimming pools across two campuses; an outdoor rooftop pool voted best outdoor pool in SF, and two indoor pools, including a deep water pool on the Parnassus Campus.  We offer a diverse array of aquatics programming including an excellent lifeguard service, American Red Cross Learn to Swim programing and certification courses, a US Masters swim team, and a water exercise program.

We are looking for a passionate aquatics professional to join our team as an American Red Cross Instructor.  We offer American Red Cross certification courses in Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED & First Aid, and Water Safety Instruction.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

UCSF Fitness and Recreation operates two fitness centers at UCSF. We provide fitness and wellbeing services to UCSF Students, Faculty, Staff and Community members through a broad range of fitness, recreation, aquatics, personal training, outdoor programs, and health and wellness programs. We make life better here by inspiring fitness and wellbeing for everyone. UCSF Fitness & Recreation’s mission is to enrich the human spirit, quality of life, and community at UCSF. We are passionate fitness and recreation professionals committed to doing quality work. We fulfill that mission by providing our members with exceptional service, knowledgeable staff, a wide variety of activities, and a clean environment. We are a customer service division, providing needed services on all UCSF campus sites and delivering these services with PRIDE: Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Diversity and Excellence.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent certification.
  • Advanced knowledge of program activity.
  • Work leadership and interpersonal skills for those in a lead capacity, and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally.
  • Service orientation; program management, sound judgment and decision-making, critical thinking skills; skills to develop original ideas, creative problem solving skills in a varied and challenging environment.
  • Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of basic computer programs relevant to job duties.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to successfully pass FBI and DOJ Criminal Check.
  • Ability to work effectively, across all organization levels, internally and externally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • May work in youth, fitness, and outdoor programs.
  • Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.
