Description
Canyon Country Youth Corps The Canyon Country Discovery Center is seeking a motivated professional to assist in field operations of our Canyon Country Youth Corps (CCYC). CCYC is a service program for youth and young adults, many of whom are local or Native American residents of the Colorado Plateau. CCYC teaches effective life skills, field techniques, tool use, resource management, backcountry living skills, habitat protection, and healthy living. It also prepares participants for careers in natural resources and recreation management. CCYC is an AmeriCorps program. Work projects include habitat restoration, trail maintenance, invasive species removal, and fuels reduction on public lands. Summary The CCYC Field Boss is an AmeriCorps position that provides field operations support to ensure crews have sufficient resources to meet their job needs. Primary responsibilities include: preparing for service hitches, planning needs for backcountry hitches, cleaning and organizing the corps workshop and bunkhouse, assisting with maintenance of corps resources, and carrying out staff plans to meet field operations needs. The Field Boss works closely under staff direction to ensure all program needs are met. The Field Boss travels often to remote field sites to support members. They will spend 80% of their time in the field. Responsibilities & Functions Program Logistics: Assisting Program Manager as advised. Manage and organize a clean and efficient operations center (CCDC Basecamp). Maintain and repair equipment and tools including a fleet of 20 chainsaws. Supervise de-rigs and re-supply of tools, equipment and food for all crews. Maintain an accurate inventory of CCYC tools and equipment. Purchase, maintain, and repair hand tools, forestry equipment, camp equipment, uniforms, and supplies as needed. Plan for the logistics associated with new programs as they arise. Coordinate the repair and maintenance of CCYC vehicles with CCDC facilities manager. General Administration: Work within the established program budget in association with the Program Manager. Support Field Coordinator in performing regular field site visits and complete reports with necessary documentation. Meet regularly with CCYC staff members. Field Support and Risk Management: Provide support, evaluation, and guidance to Crew Leaders during field visits. Enforce all organizational policies and procedures in the field and at Basecamp. Enforce high project quality by providing technical assistance to crews as needed. Respond to crew emergencies. AmeriCorps Benefits Education award of $6,345.00 upon completion of 1700 hours of service. Access to conferences and AmeriCorps training sessions throughout the year. The education award is eligible to be matched by several institutions. This position is YOUR service year. CCYC is a small program that can help you reach your goals during and after your term. Physical/Essential Requirements This position requires periodic overnight travel and non-traditional work hours, including weekend and evening hours. To successfully perform essential functions, the candidate is required to sit, stand, walk, speak and hear. The Field Boss may be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl on an infrequent basis and possess the ability to hike and climb in rough terrain. They must be able to operate office equipment, telephone, and computer and reach with hands and arms. The Field Boss may be required to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted. Qualifications
Required Skills and Qualifications Experience with youth conservation corps or outdoor-based youth development programs. Good organizational and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and teaching/mentoring skills. Strong conflict resolution and team building skills. Able to work independently and as part of a fast-paced team environment. Positive attitude and ability to drive a fun, professional relationship with young adults. Successful candidates must possess a valid driver’s license, insurable driving record, and acceptable background check. Preferred Skills and Qualifications Experience in all or most of the following: trail construction & maintenance, chainsaw operation & maintenance, hand tool maintenance, herbicide application, fencing, rafting, running backcountry crews. Current CPR & WFR or WFA certification. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
