Posting Summary

Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey is seeking a motivated Ambulatory Care Technician for the Department of Medicine – Division of Infectious Disease within the New Jersey Medical School. The Ambulatory Technician (ACT) will provide medical assistance to Nurses and Physicians in the overall care of patients, including technical procedures such as phlebotomy, and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections. The ACT functions under the direct supervision and authority of a Physician when performing clinical tasks during patient care. The ACT demonstrates problem-solving skills as they relate to patient care activities, provides guidance for and acts as a role model for Medical Assistants in the clinical area.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Under clinical supervision, performs delegated procedures, common to the specialty area in a safe, effective, and efficient manner according to Clinical Practice Policy and Procedures.
  • Performs telephone and in-person screenings. Obtains and records patient’s vital signs. Reports screening findings to practitioner and records on appropriate documentation forms. Performs chart review prior to clinic visit to obtain historical data.
  • As directed by physician, administers approved medications, including vaccinations, via intramuscular and subcutaneous injections as may be delegated under state regulations.
  • Assists provider in identified patient procedures, treatments and examinations (preparation, positioning, supplies, equipment).
  • Appropriately obtains and manages specimens, including: labeling, form completion, transport to laboratories, and log maintenance. Performs quality control for waived testing.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and implements emergency procedures according to clinic guidelines. Administers first aid, CPR, and maintains emergency equipment and supplies.
  • In close partnership with health care team, assures smooth and efficient patient flow and clinical operation.
  • Performs related and delegated tasks, which includes requests for prescription refills, taking and relaying messages, directing patient flow and running errands.
  • Assists patients to exam room and prepares patient for examination. Assists patients in wheelchairs and stretchers with transfers to and from exam tables, procedure tables, and scale, utilizing proper body mechanics and safety measures.
  • Orders, stocks, and maintains exam rooms and clinic areas with standard level of supplies, medications, linens, forms and equipment.
  • Performs data collection and data entry, as needed. Enters data into Ryan White database, as needed, tracks interventions and outcomes.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Graduation from a post-secondary medical assisting education program accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Current certification from the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or registration from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT), or any recognized certifying body approved by the Board. Primary Source Verification: NJ Division of Consumer Affairs.
  • Applicants may be licensed in the State of New Jersey in another classification permitted by regulations to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
  • Must have experience in the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Computer literacy with competence in Microsoft Office components.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one (1) year of related experience in a medical office setting.
  • NJDHSS HIV counselor certification.
  • Knowledge of Newark community.
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish).

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift or exert force up to ten (10) pounds.
  • Assists with transportation services in the clinic.
