The Texas A&M University Cyclotron Institute, a Department of Energy University Facility, is jointly supported by DOE and the State of Texas and is a major technical and educational resource for the state and the nation. At the Institute, we focus on conducting basic research, educating students in accelerator-based science and technology, and providing technical capabilities for a wide variety of applications in space science, materials science, analytical procedures and nuclear medicine. The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance and installation of all low conductivity water-cooling systems, and refrigeration systems used to support Cyclotron operations. The selected candidate would also oversee and direct the work of other staff. Required Education and Experience:

  • High school graduation or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Six years of air conditioning and refrigeration mechanic experience.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must be able to obtain State of Texas class "C" vehicle driver license within 30 days of employment.

  • Must have EPA Class I, II, III and Universal Refrigerant Certification.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of electric and pneumatic test equipment, calibration panel, charging sets, and other mechanical equipment pertinent to the trade.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a federally certified HVAC apprentice program.

  • Courses in mechanical engineering.

  • Four years journeyman air conditioning and refrigeration mechanic, including one year as a leader or supervisor.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Licensed air conditioning and refrigeration mechanic.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to repair water pumps.

  • Braze and solder copper pipe.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance & Installation Cooling Systems - Responsible for the maintenance and installation of all low conductivity water cooling systems, cooling tower, heat exchangers and pumps used in the production of low conductivity cooling water used to operate two Cyclotrons and experiential equipment.

  • Maintenance & Installation Heat Exchangers/Cryo Compressors - Maintains and installs refrigeration systems for chilled water heat exchangers and cryo-compressors. Assists with the operation and maintenance of helium refrigeration systems. Oversees and directs the work of an Accelerator Technician and Student Worker in the maintenance and installation of refrigeration systems. Works with operations and research staff. Requires driving a vehicle off campus.

  • Facilities - Serves as building proctor and oversees warehouse storage.

  • Machinery - Operates overhead cranes and forklift as needed and performs other duties as assigned.
