- Hiring Department: Biological Sciences Location: Chicago, IL USA Requisition ID: 1015890 Posting Close Date:1/20/2023 Description: Under the supervision of the Greenhouse Gardener, the Agricultural Gardener Foreman will share responsibility for the general, seven day-a-week operation of the departmental greenhouse that primarily includes the care and maintenance of the research plant collections and experiments of departmental faculty and graduate students and those collections used for teaching purposes. Duties & Responsibilities 1. Propagate, cultivate and maintain teaching materials in greenhouse, growth rooms, and/or outdoor plots for advanced as well as introductory courses. Establish daily schedule to meet course needs, inspect teaching collections weekly, maintain for use over more than one term or for re-use over a lapse of time. Set up and maintain records on this work. 2. Serve departmental faculty and graduate students in the care and maintenance of research work and teaching collections, including: Maintaining proper settings for temperature control (regulating heating, cooling, and venting procedures). Watering of plant collections. Potting, transplanting, and showing of seed flats. Monitoring the plant collections for insects, diseases, plant growth problems (under watering or over watering), recognizing the problem and applying appropriate measures for remedy in consultation with horticulturalist and faculty member/grad student conducting the research. Assisting the faculty or grad student in preparation of research project and “harvest” and data collection at conclusion of the research project. Maintaining integrity of data and protocols and confidentiality of data. 3. Maintain greenhouse facility and grounds, including: General cleaning and upkeep of greenhouse rooms. Removal of plant and soil refuse. White-washing of greenhouse room, maintenance and upkeep of outdoor cold frames. Care of outdoor plant collection. Inspect plant collections for disease and pest control, and take appropriate measures for health of plants. Monitor environmental conditions, daily maintenance of growth rooms, report problems, and remedy as needed. Assist in special seed or plant propagation. Assist research investigators, including graduate students, with setting up special conditions for plant growth and study, or plant use. Act as supervisor of greenhouse in absence of the horticulturist, with full authority to make timely purchases, direct student or other helpers, order repairs, approve payroll (of student or extra help workers). Hire, train and supervise hourly helpers for regular maintenance or special tasks such as setting up outdoor plots. 4. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications Three (3) years (36 months) of professional work experience gardening and/or in gardening management at a greenhouse, nursery, or garden center Possession of a current State of Illinois pesticide applicator’s license as applicable to the work assignments of the position to be filled. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of machines and tools,including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance Knowledge of the symptoms of plant diseases, the control of such diseases,and the control of insects that attack plants.
