Position Summary

The position is responsible for manure - assists with agitation, cleaning, hauling and application of solid and liquid manure from storage locations to various locations as directed by farm management using tractor and spreader up to 245 hp; harvest - (Hay, Straw and Corn); assist in bailing and unloading of crops (square and round bales), chopping and hauling as directed by the farm manager; Field tillage; assists with field preparation by plowing, disking, picking stones and soil finishing using tractors up to 245 hp and tillage equipment up to 25 feet wide; Hauling; Transporting crops and equipment using truck; Equipment maintenance - Service of tractors and equipment to include oil changes, preventive maintenance and repairs; Snow plan - Assists with snow removal on south campus farms, facilities and parking lots. Other duties as assigned by manager.


Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
  • One year experience operating agricultural and/or special equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of agricultural and/or special equipment.
  • Possession of or attainment prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period of an MSU forklift operator's permit.
  • Frequent lifting of over 75 pounds.
  • May require possession or attainment of a Michigan Pesticide Applicator's Certificate with categories 3A, 3B and 6 prior to completion of applicable trial or probation period.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator's license.
  • Must drive University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification.
  • The ability to work in variable or severe weather conditions.
  • Participation in Campus Snow Removal Plan.
  • This position requires significant after-hours, weekend and holiday work.

Desired Qualifications

One year satisfactory agricultural work experience. Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator license(s) is necessary. 6 months after hire date will require possession of commercial drivers license (CDL) with Class A endorsement. Frequent lifting of over 75 pounds is required. Upon hire will require possession of a commercial pesticide applicator license with category 1A. May require possession or attainment of a MSU Fork Lift operator's permit prior to completion of applicable trial or probation period.
