As a part-time member of the WMD/HazMat Ops Program training team, the Wage Instructor will be responsible for instructing and facilitating emergency response training courses in a challenging adult education learning environment. The Wage Instructor will utilize their knowledge of adult learning theories and learning styles to maximize learner success and ensure overall effectiveness of the course instruction. The Wage Instructor will use a variety of media to present course materials and will serve as a "Subject Matter Expert (SME)" in CBRNE/HazMat emergency response. The Wage Instructor will participate in curriculum update activities. The Wage Instructor will report to the Training Manager.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Four years of related experience in CBRNE, MCI, response and deterrence, anti-terrorism, and/or counter-terrorism

  • One year of adult education and/or training experience

Required Licenses/Certifications: 

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Passport within 6 months of employment

  • Nationally recognized (IFSAC or Pro Board) certification in Hazardous Materials First Responder: Operations

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university

  • 5 or more years of experience in a combination of the following: CBRNE, MCI, response and deterrence, anti-terrorism, and/or counter-terrorism

  • Nationally recognized (IFSAC or Pro Board) certification in Hazardous Materials First Responder: Technician, Specialist, and Incident Command

  • 5 or more years of experience in hazardous materials response and mitigation

  • 5 or more years of experience in air monitoring and sampling in hazardous materials response

  • Experience in WMD operations and training, emergency response planning and operations, or emergency management experience

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to support training delivery for up to 8-10 hours/day (standing)

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing

  • Ability to regularly use a computer/keyboard

  • Physical conditioning consistent with wearing hazardous materials Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including donning and doffing self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), setting up classrooms, movement of training equipment and instructional materials up to 50lbs

  • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving and/or flying on commercial airlines

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Advanced working knowledge in WMD and/or CBRNE operations

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for teaching and instructing individuals and groups

  • Proficiency with basic office software and instructional programs

  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods

  • Skilled in utilizing various learning and active listening strategies

  • Ability to orally express and comprehend information and use inductive and deductive reasoning

  • Excellent (oral/written) communication and presentation skills

  • Ability to interact positively and professionally with staff and emergency response personnel and emergency managers

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

Notifications: 

  • This position routinely requires extensive travel (50% or more), which may include domestic and some international travel.

  • This position is funded from grant and/or contract funding, which is renewed through provisions of the grantor of the contract. Therefore, this position is contingent upon continuation of funding from these grants and/or contracts, as well as satisfactory job performance.

  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements.

  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TEEX regulations and procedures.

  • This is a wage position established to accommodate a temporary organizational need. As such, TEEX does not guarantee any set number of hours or length of employment in this role.

Essential Duties, Tasks, and Percentages: 

Delivers WMD Operations courses as assigned – 85%:

  • Assists in instructing various WMD Operational courses utilizing curriculum, course materials, and training equipment

  • Travels to and from course locations, to include domestic and foreign locations

  • Delivers the course and course exercises within the scope and intent of the Instructor Guide

  • Ensures all participants have achieved the terminal objectives of the course

  • Assists TEEX and other agencies as required as a WMD subject matter expert and instructor

  • Ensures classrooms/exercise locations are ready for participants

Participates in the Development and/or updates of various WMD course materials - 10%:

  • Actively participates in the updating and revising of a course as a team member in the curriculum processes

  • Reviews new instructional materials as they become available to determine relevance with current courses

  • Assists with the research and development of WMD course related materials to include lesson plans, outlines, training aids, manuals, and scenarios

  • Revises and updates existing course material as necessary to maintain course relevancy

  • Creates and/or updates PowerPoint presentations and /or other graphic training aids

  • Identifies content and resources which would be appropriate for use in course revisions

Administrative/Fiscal Responsibility - 5%:

  • Submits travel forms to Training Manager within two business days after course completion 

  • Submits After Action Reports (AAR) to Training Manager within two business days after course completion

  • Submits MDR by the assigned due date 

  • Maintains course and student documentation for class deliveries

  • Submits course documentation in a timely manner and completes additional required reports by suspense date

Other Duties:

  • As part of the TEEX’s mission of providing training, developing practical solutions, and saving lives; this position could be required, if called upon, to deploy within the State of Texas as directed by this position’s Division Director/ HQ Department Head

  • Supports the TEEX values of Safety, Teamwork, Adaptability, Respect and Stewardship in all work activities

  • Participates in professional development activities specifically targeted at improving instruction techniques (not subject matter)

  • Maintains required professional credentials

  • Follows all dress codes associated with work activity (i.e., travel, workshops, in office, etc.)

  • Works cooperatively and respectfully with other sections, programs, and divisions within TEEX

  • Performs additional work duties as assigned
