Summary: The Department of Mathematics seeks two affiliate faculty for full time, 9-month, continuing positions. These positions are full-time, 9-month positions; after initial 1-year contracts for each of the first two years, the position may be renewed with continuing 3-year contracts. These positions will start August 6, 2024.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • By August 6, 2024, either 1) a Master’s degree in Mathematics or 2) a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with a Master’s degree in a related field and at least 18 graduate credit hours in mathematics.
  • Evidence of effective teaching, with demonstrated interest in foundational mathematics including introductory algebra, college algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus 
  • Evidence of reflective thinking about the teaching and learning of mathematics at the foundational level
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect, empathy, and cultural humility.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access, such as experience using inclusive teaching practices or commitment to the success of all students of all ability levels

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with courses similar to GVSU’s MTH 108, 109, 110, 122, 123, 124 (see https://www.gvsu.edu/catalog/ for more information)
  • Experience/interest with active learning strategies
  • Willingness to employ a variety of teaching methodologies, including having students use appropriate technological tools to support their learning

Responsibilities: The standard teaching load for affiliate faculty is 12-15 credits per semester (4-5 courses, usually 2-3 preps), consisting primarily of courses from MTH 108 through MTH 124. Affiliate faculty often teach 5 days per week, with some classes meeting evenings or early mornings (but not both). Most classes meet on our Allendale campus, but affiliate faculty members sometimes teach courses on our Grand Rapids campus. Responsibilities include holding office hours and attending regular course instructor meetings. There are opportunities for professional development and department service, but neither is mandatory.

Department/College: The Mathematics Department at Grand Valley State University serves over 200 majors and 8000 students annually in its classes. Our students are actively engaged in learning through small classes (max 30 students) that emphasize critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and effective communication, and offer a high degree of faculty support.
