Description

The Dynamic Mechanical Metrology Project in the Mass and Force Group of the NIST Physical Measurement Laboratory’s Quantum Measurement Division realizes measurements of sound, vibration, force, acceleration, and velocity at the highest levels of accuracy, and uses the developed methods to disseminate traceability of such measurements to society. We welcome postdoctoral scholars to work with us on innovative research to advance the state of the art in measurements of such quantities. Opportunities exist to carry out projects to achieve: photonic measurements of sound, force, and vibration; accurate optomechanical sensors for sound, force, and vibration; quantum acoustical measurements based on phonon counting and entanglement; optimal incorporation of physical information into neural networks for modeling dynamic systems; use of uncertainty information to improve the performance of sensor-network based measurements employing machine learning; uncertainty quantification and minimization by optimized statistical and signal processing methods. Additionally, proposals for improvements in dynamical mechanical metrology that do not fit in one of the above topics may be welcome. A candidate should have a background suitable for research in one of these areas.
