Berkeley Lab's Applied Mathematics and Computational Research Division (AMCRD) has an Advanced Quantum Testbed Project Scientist position to join its Advanced Quantum Testbed (AQT) program.

AQT is focused on constructing, enhancing, operating, and maintaining an open, fully accessible gate-based quantum computer. Our technology platform is based on superconducting quantum circuit processors, and we aim to generate the detailed experimental findings needed to resolve foundational questions in quantum information science, and to guide near-term hardware and algorithm co-design.

As of our mission we are hiring a quantum hardware project scientist to concentrate mainly 1) Quantum certification, verification, and validation, 2) error detection and mitigation, 3) quantum gate development, calibration and optimization, and 3) mid-circuit measurement development, deployment, optimization, and implementation in state of the art quantum protocols.

All these are areas of importance for the continued advancement of quantum information science, superconducting processors, and the Advanced Quantum Testbed.

What You Will Do:

  • Design and conduct state-of-the-art experiments for superconducting quantum processors and/or theory in quantum information science.
  • Quantum certification, verification, and validation.
  • Development, deployment and implementation of mid-circuit measurement capabilities on quantum processors.
  • Quantum error diagnosis and mitigation on superconducting processors.
  • Superconducting quantum gate calibration and optimization.
  • Validate, analyze, and interpret experimental data.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Coordinate the research of group postdoctoral candidates and graduate students as required.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. degree in physics, applied physics, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of quantum information science related to one or more of the responsibilities/research areas listed above, with emphasis on quantum certification, verification, and validation, gate calibration, error mitigation, and mid- circuit measurement.
  • Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to interface with external collaborators.
  • Ability to prepare periodic updates (written and oral) for internal and external reviews or reports.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to direct the work of technical support staff or students.
