The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is expected to deliver medical care to a wide variety of patients suffering from chronic pain and from acute pain conditions. This will be primarily in an outpatient pain clinic setting. The APRN must be qualified and competent to examine and to treat patients independently and in collaboration with other health care professionals, including pain specialist physicians. The APRN will overall ensure proper patient care, including care that focusses in disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. The APRN may conduct full patient evaluations, physical exams, may order diagnostic tests and address test results, and prescribe medications and other modalities for pain relief (including referrals to physical therapy, referrals for procedures, referrals to other specialties) under appropriate supervision and guidance from pain medicine specialist physicians. Furthermore, APRN is expected to advise patients about their continuing care, and also to participate in pertinent committee work, quality improvement and policy making activities.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                           

  • Performs and documents comprehensive health histories and complete physical examinations.

  • Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical for patients.

  • Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs.

  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.

  • Refers patients as appropriate for further care to pain medicine physicians, and/or to other relevant specialties (such as neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, internal medicine, neurology, psychiatry, etc)

  • Implements referrals for interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability.

  • Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.

  • Monitors the effectiveness of medical treatments and interventions.

  • Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.

  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.

  • Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

  • Exhibits appropriate leadership in quality improvement and patient safety activities, and participates in policy making and any necessary committee work to support the mission of the Division of Pain Management, the UM and the U Health system.

  • Participates in Pain Division didactics, lectures, and quality improvement activities.

  • Delivery of patient care mainly in outpatient pain clinic settings in Lennar Medical Center, Sylvester CCC or Don Soffer Clinical Research sites.

  • Participation in administrative activities in the Division of Pain Medicine, including faculty meetings and discussions.

  • Participation in policy making, pertinent committee work and quality improvement projects

  • Participation in clinical research activities, if necessary.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                        

Education:

  • Master’s degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

  • Valid State of Florida APRN License

Experience:  

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience preferred (but not mandatory)

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Basic knowledge in clinical aspects of pain management.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.

  • Skill in completing assignments promptly, accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

  • Ability to understand limitations and seek help from supervising physicians as necessary
