Job Summary

The APP Supervisor manages, coordinates, and administers the practice of advanced healthcare
professionals, including nurse practitioners and physicians assistants in the Department of Otolaryngology,
Head and Neck Surgery. The APP Supervisor is a role model, expert clinician, supervisor, and mentor in
clinical, professional, and administrative leadership in the department, ensuring that all APPs are trained
and competent in the skill-sets required to provide safe patient care in the surgical specialty of
Otolaryngology. The incumbent is a working supervisor and is required to work clinically in direct patient
care while performing administrative and leadership functions.
The primary clinical responsibility of the APP Supervisor is the direct application of clinical expertise to
patients and families being managed in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. This
position requires the flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APP) to be credentialed through its
Medical Staff Services Office (MSSO) in order to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to
both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Medical Center
sites (Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Satellite Clinics, et al). Credentialing and approval of the Standardized
Procedures takes between 30-60 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.


Department Description

Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery service offers a broad scope of outpatient and inpatient services
for the diagnosis and surgical management of ear, nose and throat problems; head and neck surgery; and
plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face.
Specialty programs include Otology and Neurotology, Head and Neck Surgery, Rhinology and Endoscopic
Sinus Surgery, Endocrine (Thyroid and Parathyroid) Surgery, Skull Base Surgery, Facial Plastic Surgery,
Laryngology, General Otolaryngology, Sleep Surgery, Voice and Swallowing Disorders and Audiology.


Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree required in a health care related field from an accredited program. 
  • UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APP) to be credentialed through its Medical Staff Services Office (MSSO) in order to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Medical Center sites (Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Satellite Clinics, et al). Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 30-60 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience as an Advance Practice Provider
  • A minimum of 3 years of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery experience
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and to manage the complex workflow and competing priorities involved with providing quality care as a nurse practitioner.
  • Solid knowledge of the clinical and operational issues for nurse practitioners performing advanced-practice nursing within departments and specialty areas, including evaluation, testing, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as patient-care concepts, policies, outcomes measurement, quality standards, ethics issues, quality improvement, and continuing staff education and professional development.
  • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document staff issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaborations with all levels of clinical staff and management, consultants, researchers, and outside agencies. Required Solid written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and to prepare and present a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.
  • Knowledge of clinical and administrative software and specialized applications and data management systems used by nurse practitioners in providing advanced-practice nursing care, research, documentation, and employee supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of leadership experience in an academic setting. 
  • Two years of clinical experience in an academic setting.

License/Certification

  • Current California licensure in good standing by specialty:
    • RN/NP
    • Physician Assistant
    • RN/CRNA
    • RN/CNM
  • Possess National Provider Identification (NPI)
  • Furnishing license as required by specialty
  • Current American Heart Association CPR certification 
  • National board certification in area of clinical practice upon hire 
  • Current American Heart Association CPR certification
