Required Education and Experience:

  • Successful completion of an accredited educational program for Physician Assistants; or successful completion of an approved advanced practice nursing educational program at or beyond the master’s degree level.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to use and manage an electronic medical records (EMR) system.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to apply modern techniques of medicine.

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Time management capabilities and prioritization skills.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Licensed in the State of Texas (or eligible to be licensed) as a Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Nurse Practitioner).

  • Board certified or eligible to be board certified. Candidate must be licensed and board certified prior to start date.

  • Ability to obtain DEA registration and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 6 months of employment.

  • Licensure/Certification(s) must be maintained for continued employment.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to exert moderate force and lift or move moderately heavy objects. This is a security-sensitive position.

  • The individual in this position is required to handle Protected Health Information (PHI) as defined by HIPAA regulations.

  • The individual is required to handle PHI in accordance with the A&M System policy and is further required to complete HIPAA training as a condition of employment, within a reasonable time frame after the individual’s employment, and on an as-needed basis thereafter. 

Preferred Experience:

  • Two years of experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of ICD 10 and CPT billing and coding principles and procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Provision of Care - Provides direct patient care. Orders and interprets diagnostic tests. Prescribes medications and treatments upon diagnosis of illness or injury under the direction of a physician and within the limitations of Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant limitations. Recognizes the need for consultation and/or referral. Provides patient education regarding health maintenance and illness/injury prevention.

  • EMR and Compliance - Maintains complete, accurate, and appropriate documentation of patient care in the electronic medical records system in a timely manner. Acts in accordance with all relevant licensing boards, local, state and federal laws regulating nurse practitioners or physician assistants. Participates in continuing medical education and in-service activities as required by state and national licensing/certification boards and by the department.

  • Administrative - Serves on clinical committees as assigned. Participates in accreditation activities. Assists in preparation of patient educational materials.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
