The Family Medicine Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in this position will function in a shared capacity as a family medicine/sports medicine Advanced Practice Provider (APP) for the CU Boulder Athletic Department by supporting the athletic department staff, student athletes and team physicians and also supporting the Department of Family Medicine’s sports medicine multidisciplinary sports medicine clinics by providing support to the DFM’s Sports Medicine Program/Enterprise at different locations with varying sports medicine responsibilities based on the clinic/location.  

1.     CU Athletics Department / CU Athletics Training Room (50% effort)

a.     CU Athletic Department

  • Collaborates with the University of Colorado Sports Medicine interdisciplinary staff in providing evidence based, high quality care to all student athletes.
  • Provide assistance in scheduling appropriate care and ensuring timely access to additional resources for student athletes.
  • Promote and facilitate communication among non-operative, operative team physicians, and other ancillary providers/services, the student athlete, coaches and team physicians
  • Managing and inventorying clinic supplies
  • Ensures efficient patient flow in the Sports Medicine Clinics
  • Monitors athletic related injury documentation
  • Assists with data interpretation of imaging studies, bloodwork/labs, and specialty tests in conjunction with team physicians as appropriate
  • Participate in Student Athlete Wellness Team meetings
  • Coordinate care for student athletes
  • Assist in research studies that support the health and well-being of the student athlete
  • Game day assistance as needed

b.    CU Athletics – Training Room (specific responsibilities)

  • Harmonizing/inputting team physician schedules in Epic, physician templates, blocking out physician schedules for vacations/conferences, etc.
  • Maintaining and updating dot phrases in Epic with appropriate ATC numbers, labs, and prescription and other orders as determined
  • Working with CU Athletics insurance coordinator to populate and update student insurance information in Epic
  • Serve as the Epic lead and liaison for staff in any new modules, workflows, training sessions for Epic/CU Medicine/UCHealth
  • Oversee and maintain prescription medication safes (Champs and CUEC) to include ordering, maintaining and reconciling logs
  • Stocking E1 kits with medications prior to football team away games
  • Perform PRP draws, Lab Draws, IVs, EKGs, and render allergy shots
  • Ordering prescriptions for athletes when needed, assist team physicians with taking vitals, strep tests, and see athletes as needed in lieu of team physician
  • Facilitate access to Boulder Community Health/UCHealth for advanced lab tests, ER visits, etc. and help coordinate referrals
  • Assist with any public health emergency data reporting
  • Perform Returner physicals and update data in Epic with appropriate medications, allergies, surgeries, etc.
  • Assist with ordering supplies for the exam rooms
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Health and Performance 

2.     Sports Medicine Outpatient Clinic – UCHealth Steadman Hawkins Inverness and/or Colorado Center (50% effort)

  • Provide direct patient care for patients who require/request same-day appointments alongside attending sports medicine faculty physician.
  • Provide Epic in-basket management support to sports medicine providers as assigned to include, but not limited to: answering my health connection messages and patient calls in assigned provider in-baskets and take care of the message completely, coordinate with the sports medicine physician if they are in clinic if needed, protocols to be developed.
  • Serve as a point of contact for staff (RNs, front desk, MAs) for acute patient issues not requiring appointment to address.
  • Meet with Medical Director/clinic director/Chief of Primary Sports Medicine monthly at first to discuss needs and schedule.
  • Refill medications, review charts in detail, check PDMP for controlled substances.  Task to MA/ATC pools if patient needs to schedule an appointment.
  • Review any "flagged" labs and notify patient of results.
  • Place referrals or obtain authorizations if appropriate
  • Attempt to close the loop in as many tasks as possible and document work done on any tasks worked on, but not completed (e.g. messages left, outreach attempted).
  • Assist in orientation of new sports medicine fellows to include access to EPIC, Buff One cards, access to training room, etc. 

3.     Teaching

  • May provide teaching experiences for students (pre-med, medical, nursing, pharmacy, physician assistant, nurse practitioner) as requested. Participate in the education and training of residents as requested and appropriate for clinical site.
  • Assist in the coordination of patient health education/self-management support.
  • Provide input into staff and interdisciplinary education as needed.
  • Disseminate information to health care professionals about health care issues. 

4.     Research

  • May participate in clinical research and other scholarly activities appropriate to the academic rank.
  • Initiate relevant research and disseminate ongoing research information relevant to clinical/educational environments as time and resources allow. 

5.     Quality Improvement

  • Participate in clinic quality improvement teams.
  • Participate in ongoing and new quality improvement projects within the clinic and in other settings as assigned.
  • Participate in clinic and provider meetings. 

Work Location:

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.  

Senior Instructor Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters/Doctor of Nursing practice degree or graduation from an NCCPA-approved physician assistant program
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the State of Colorado.
  • Completion of required 1,000 hours (provisional prescription authority/mentorship) or other minimum as defined by State of Colorado in order to obtain full prescriptive authority and DEA registration.
  • Minimum 3+ years (full time) of FNP or PA experience working in a Sports Medicine Ambulatory practice preferred and comfortable charting in Epic.
  • Collegiate or professional sports team experience a plus
  • Medicare/Medicaid credentials.
  • Unrestricted DEA license and current CPR license.
  • National certification by ANCC or AANP as family or adult nurse practitioner (if FNP).
  • Minimum 3+ years (full time) of FNP or PA experience working in a Sports Medicine Ambulatory practice preferred and experience with an EHR. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ or more years of practice experience working in a Family Medicine/Sports Medicine Ambulatory practice and Collegiate or professional sports team experience
  • Experience working with Epic or another EHR.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate sports medicine and team physician related care to both student athletes and private practice sports medicine patients.
  • Demonstrates cultural humility and commitment to minimizing implicit bias in clinical care 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to consult with supervisory physicians on patient care and administrative issues.
  • Able to document history, physical examinations, assessments and treatment plans for each patient by using the electronic medical record and enter follow-up diagnostic testing and laboratory studies that have been ordered.
  • Able to discuss and promote wellness for all patients.
  • Knows when and how to refer patients to other health care professionals when the care that needs to be provided is beyond their scope of practice.
  • Proven effectiveness in working with individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA/FERPA.

    Senior Instructor Hiring Range:

    $95,000 – $147,522
